Gildea, Whiting Off To Quick Starts

BURLINGTON, VT --- 2007 Lake Monster outfielders Mark Gildea and Boomer Whiting are off to quick starts after joining the Single-A Hagerstown Suns recently as all four Washington Nationals Minor League affiliates continue to play .500 or better baseball through May 18th.

Gildea made his 2008 debut with the Suns on Sunday the 18th, going 3-for-3 with three runs, a double and a home run in Hagerstown's 10-7 victory over Kannapolis. Whiting, who was 2-for-2 with a run and two walks in the victory, is hitting .400 (18-for-45) with 14 runs, three doubles, one homer and nine RBI in 12 games for Hagerstown.

Double-A Harrisburg of the Eastern League and Single-A Potomac of the Carolina League continue to lead their respective divisions. Harrisburg (26-14) has a 1.5 game lead in the EL Southern Division, while Potomac (26-15) has a 2.0 game lead in the CL Northern Division. Triple-A Columbus is three games over .500 at 24-21, while Hagerstown's win on Sunday evened its record at 21-21.

2006 Lake Monsters pitcher Cory VanAllen and 2007 Vermont hurler Jordan Zimmermann have both continued their strong starts after being promoted to Harrisburg from Potomac. VanAllen is a combined 6-0 (3-0 at both Potomac and Harrisburg) with a 1.17 ERA in eight games, while Zimmermann is a combined 4-2 with one save and a 2.04 ERA in seven games.

2007 Lake Monsters first baseman Bill Rhinehart leads the South Atlantic League with 40 RBI and is among the top 10 hitters with a .318 average. 2004 Vermont catcher Luke Montz is fourth in the Eastern League with 33 RBI, while 2006 Lake Monsters outfielder Justin Maxwell leads the Eastern League with 35 runs.
