Port Huron Icehawks News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Port Huron Icehawks saw an unbelievable season and a nearly unbelievable comeback put to an end on Monday when Justin Hodgman scored 23 seconds into triple overtime to boost the Fort Wayne Komets to a 3-2 overtime win in a decisive game 7 of the IHL Turner Cup Finals.

After facing elimination and a 3-1 series deficit, the Komets rebounded with three consecutive victories to win the best-of-seven series and hoist the cup in front of a sellout crowd of 10,462 at Memorial Coliseum.

The Icehawks fought to the end despite being outshot 60-36. Port Huron goalie Larry Sterling turned in an amazing performance for Port Huron and stopped 57 of 60 shots to keep his team in the game.

The game seemed poised to end in regulation until Tab Lardner scored at 19:08 in the third period to tie the game and force the overtime period. The goal came after the Icehawks pulled Sterling for an extra attacker.

After a scoreless first period, Hodgman lit the lamp at 6:03 in the second period to put the Komets on the board. Guy Dupuis scored on the power play at 13:57 in the second stanza to give the Komets the 2-0 lead, but just 35 seconds later Port Huron's Jeff Zehr notched a goal of his own to make it a one goal game. Zehr was assisted by Rich Hansen and Jamie Carroll. The third period was scoreless until Lardner tied the game with just seconds to play.

The Icehawks were 0-7 on the power play, while the Komets were 1-5 on the power play.

Fort Wayne goalie Nick Boucher stopped 34 of 36 shots in the win.

Game Notes...Komets amateur Hodgman was named Turner Cup Playoff MVP. He had 14 points (7g, 7a) through two rounds of the playoffs.
