BUFFALO, N.Y. (May 12, 2008) - The National Lacrosse League announced today that Buffalo's Mark Steenhuis was named Transition Player of the Year.
Steenhuis tallied 75 points (34+41) on the season, while helping the Bandits to a 10-6 regular-season record and claim the East Division title. He led the Bandits in goals scored and was second on the team in total points, trailing only John Tavares with 87 points (29+58). He also led all transition players in the league with goals and overall points. Steenhuis also scooped up 121 loose balls during the regular season, which tied for fifth most among transition players.
The 28-year-old right-hander recorded seven goals in the Bandits' 14-12 win over New York in the Eastern Division Championship on Saturday at HSBC Arena. His seven-goal night set a new franchise record for most goals scored in a playoff game. The previous record of six goals was set in 1992 by John Tavares.
Steenhuis was named the NLL Transition Player of the Week four times throughout the season. The Transition Player of the Year Award was created during the 2007 season with Steve Toll of the Rochester Knighthawks winning the award last season.
The award winners are chosen by a vote of the leagues coaches, general managers, and executives. Voting for the awards took place following the conclusion of the regular season and prior to the start of the playoffs.
The Buffalo Bandits will face off against the Portland Lumberjax at HSBC Arena on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 PM in the 2008 Edge NLL Championship Game.
Individual tickets for the Championship game are on sale now. Ticket prices are $31 (100 Lvl III & 300 Lvls I/II), $33 (100 Lvl II), and $41 (100 Preferred & 200 Club).
