Ducks Host Earth Fair May 8

Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 6, 2008)- The Long Island Ducks and their partners are coming together this Thursday, May 8, to showcase the first-ever Citibank Park Earth Fair during the team's home game against the expansion Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The evening is just a part of the season-long "Go Green" campaign undertaken by the club centered around educating fans and raising awareness about the impact they can have on their community and environment by implementing green choices into everyday living.

"For eight seasons this organization has prided itself on promoting and participating in environmentally conscious programs," said Ducks GM Michael Pfaff. "But, with the topic becoming more important each day, 2008 was time to implement an official program, raise the profile of our efforts and include our partners in order to have the greatest impact possible on the Long Island community and the 430,000+ Ducks fans that enter Citibank Park each season."

Some of the previous and current green initiatives undertaken by the team include the placement of solar panels on the stadium roof to power a portion of the luxury suite level and home clubhouse; placing "Ricky Recycle" receptacles throughout ballpark for each home game so fans can recycle their bottles and cans, a program that benefits Winthrop Hospital's Cans for Cancer program; enrollment in Operation Save New York, a demand response program to reduce ballpark electricity use when the grid is forecast to be unstable; participation in Nike's "Reuse a Shoe" program, where Citibank Park is used as one of the drop off/collection points for used sneakers in the offseason. Collected sneakers are then recycled and used for materials to make new playing surfaces, sports equipment, padding, gear and more.

On Thursday evening, the first 1,500 fans will be treated to "Go Green" T-Shirts, courtesy of Island Screenprint. In addition, multiple "Go Green Tips of the Game" (pre-produced videos by News 12 and the Long Island Ducks explaining how fans can incorporate green living into everyday life) will be shown at each between-inning break. On the concourse, members of the Ducks "Go Green Team" will be interacting with fans to educate them about their own green initiatives. Go Green Team members expected to be in attendance include LIPA, National Grid (formerly KeySpan), Go Green Environmental LLC (formerly Aqua Nova Commercial Services), The Nature Conservancy, Clean Air New York, Cans for Cancer (Winthrop Hospital/Recycling in the Community), and Keep Islip Clean.
