SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts announced today that they have signed three pitchers for the upcoming 2008 season. Joining the Colts this summer are LHP Frank James, RHP Luke Massetti, and RHP Toro Trevino.
James, from Clear Lake, Texas, returns to San Angelo for his seventh professional season after a previous stint with the Colts in the second half of the 2006 season. Last year, the lefty starter was a big reason why the Alexandria Aces won their second straight ULB Championship. The 27-year-old posted single-season career highs in wins (9) and strikeouts (82) along with a 3.95 ERA (10th best in the league) in 95 2/3 innings pitched.
James started his career in 2002 with Ft. Worth of the now-defunct Central League before playing two seasons with Rockford of the Frontier League. He split time between Edinburg and Rockford in 2005 and started the 2006 season with Calgary of the Northern League before making his way to San Angelo.
Massetti, who spent this past Spring Training as a member of the New York Yankees organization, is back with the Colts for his second pro season. In 2007 in San Angelo, he tied for the team lead with eight wins and registered a remarkable 2.51 ERA, second best in the league. The 25-year-old from Modesto, California also topped United League Baseball with two shutouts and was top-10 in the league in innings pitched, despite signing two weeks after the season started. The fire-baller also averaged over one strikeout per inning and his strikeout-to-walk ratio was nearly seven-to-one.
Trevino, 25 years old, enters his first season with the Colts and third professional season overall. He comes to San Angelo from the Frontier League where he spent 2006 with Windy City and 2007 with Gateway. He was 18-8 combined with the two teams, including an 11-5 record last year. The right-hander from Corpus Christi made 34 appearances, all of them starts, in two years in the FL, hurling 212 1/3 innings with 151 strikeouts.
The Colts begin the 2008 season with six games on the road before returning to San Angelo for their home opener at Foster Field on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m., and following the game fans will be treated to a Fireworks Show sponsored by Adobe Signs & T-shirts and KLST.
