Myrtle Beach, SC - The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, scored three runs after the seventh Saturday night but could not plate a late tying run against Myrtle Beach in a 6-4 defeat. The Avs (11-11) dropped two of three to the Pelicans (13-10) in the series to conclude the road trip 2-4.

The Avalanche trailed 6-1 as the eighth inning began with Pelican righty Chris Vines on the mound. With Jordan Parraz in scoring position, Orlando Rosales reached on an error by Vines that brought Parraz to the plate.

With one out in the ninth, Greg Buchanan singled to right. Next, Wladimir Sutil doubled hard down the left-field line. With that, Vines was replaced by lefty Kevin Gunderson. After a strikeout, Parraz bounced a ball to second base that Travis Jones dove for and tossed to high for Brandon Poweel to field and keep the bag. On the play, Buchanan scored. The following batter, Jimmy Van Ostrand, singled to right to plate Sutil and make the score 6-4. Orlando Rosales, though, couldn't keep the rally moving as he popped out to shortstop.

Myrtle Beach got a pair of home runs in the game as Jon Mark Owings and Yohan Silva homered a batter apart in the seventh inning. For the Avalanche, Jordan Parraz extended his league-leading on-base streak to 19 games with a two-hit night.

Salem returns home for a Monday game with Kinston at 7:07 PM to begin a seven-game homestand, its longest so far this season.
