Potomac Nationals News Release
FREDERICK, Md. - Although it is still April, the standings in the Carolina League are rapidly heating up. The Potomac Nationals were able to extend their lead to 2 ½ games over Frederick in the Northern Division with an impressive 3-2 triumph Saturday at Harry Grove Stadium.
Frederick starter Kyle Schmidt made his first start of the season after previously making five relief appearances for the Keys. The right-hander lasted just 3 2/3 innings allowing one run while striking out four.
The story of the game, however, was Potomac's pitching. Adrian Alaniz (2-0), who was coming off his first career win as a P-Nat, strategically maneuvered his way through five innings allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out six and walking one. The 24-year-old left the game with a 3-1 lead in route to his second consecutive victory.
Potomac's lead came complimentary of the newest member of the Nationals every day lineup. Leonard Davis unloaded for a two-out two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning off of reliever Ryan Ouellette for a 3-1 lead. The home run marked the fourth of the season for Davis, which leads the team after having played in six games.
Three runs would be all the P-Nats would need offensively as the bullpen secured the victory. Craig Stammen made his sixth appearance of the season. Despite allowing a home run to the first hitter he faced in Matt Wieters, Stammen retired the next nine hitters he faced over the next three innings.
Zech Zinicola pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season. Zinicola extended his scoreless innings streak to 10 1/3 which he has compiled over six outings.
The victory halts a two-game losing streak for Potomac. The Nationals will try to avoid dropping their second consecutive series tomorrow in the rubber match against Frederick. Jhonny Nunez (0-2, 3.48), who tied a career high with 10 strikeouts against Winston-Salem in his previous start will take the hill opposite Brandon Erbe (2-1, 3.04). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
