April 20, 2008 - North American Hockey League (NAHL) - U.S. National Team News Release

KAZAN, Russia - A total of eight players notched points and netmider Brandon Maxwell (Winter Park, Fla.) stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced in helping the U.S. National Under-18 Team record a 4-1 victory over Germany here tonight in quarterfinal action at the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Hockey Championship.

"This was a good win for our team," said John Hynes, head coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team. "We had every player in the lineup contributing, and we will need that again tomorrow night in our semifinal against Russia."

The United States tallied the only goal of the first period, at the 4:20 mark, when Robbie Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) recorded his fourth point of the tournament. Ryan Hegarty (Arlington, Mass.) and Kyle Palmieri (Montvale, N.J.) ware each credited with assists on the play. Hegarty wristed a shot from the left point towards the German net and Czarnik was able to tip the puck up high into the right side of the net.

As a result of a two-man advantage, David Weiss put the Germans on the scoreboard at the 1:56 mark of the second period.

Team USA then rattled off the final three markers of the contest, including two in the middle stanza. David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) provided the game-winning goal for the Americans at 4:38 when he put a wrist shot from close range through the legs of German goalie Philipp Grubauer. David Warsofsky (Marshfield, Mass.) and Czarnik dished out helpers on the goal. Colin Moore (Medfield, Mass.) added his third goal of the tournament at the 10:35 mark, thanks to an assist from Warsofsky. Warsofsky slipped a pass from the left wing onto the stick of Moore in the slot, and Moore beat Grubauer with a high shot on the glove side.

The score remained 3-1 until 11:36 of the final frame as Palmieri netted his second goal of the tournament, after taking a feed from Danny Kristo (Eden Prairie, Minn.). Kristo skated the puck around the German net and directed a pass onto the stick of Palmieri, who was located in the slot. Palmieri wristed a shot just inside the right post, to secure his second point of the contest.

Grubauer finished with 28 saves in the loss for Germany.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team squares-off against Russia tomorrow night in one of two semifinals at Tatneft Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. local time (11 a.m. EDT).
