Chill Dominate Alberta All-Stars in First Exhibition Game

April 12, 2008 - International Basketball League (IBL)
Edmonton Chill News Release

The Edmonton Chill gave the public a small taste of what was to come this season when the team opens the 2008 IBL season in two weeks. The Chill took on the Alberta All-Stars, a team with some of Alberta's top collegiate talent, and with only a few informal workouts and just a single organized practice, the Chill cruised to a 132-91 win.

Using a few set plays and some basic formations, Head Coach Paul Sir began to lay the foundation for what looks to be a high-octane offense, the new teammates could easily have scored 150 with a kinder iron. JR Patrick continued to assert his place as the captain of the team as the Eastglen High School alum directed the game from the off gaurd and small forward positions. Soon to be University of Alberta graduate Andrew Parker saw his first post-collegiate action and put his amazing athleticism on display, wowing the fans with four highlight reel dunks. The organization also got their first look at Teon Knox. The 6'9" 265 pound native of Baltimore, MD impressed everybody with not only his size, but with his speed, stamina and his repetoire of low-post moves. Minutes were spread through all nine of the Chill players and by the end of the night, Rashaun Broadus and Phil Scherer's speed and smarts wore down the All-Stars backcourt, while Lunzaya Nlandu, Marques Hayden, and Xavier Powell dominated down low and on the boards.

Asst. Coaches Clayton Pottinger and Todd Warnick handled the opponents X's and O's, leading a game challenger that managed to keep the game close for about 15 minutes, before ultimately succuming to the larger and more talented Chill squad.

Chill Owner and President Troy Barns said, "Deep down I wanted to win by 50, but the important thing was to get the guys together as team and play against another team. I certainly thank the All-Stars who came tonight to play our guys, and they fought hard for 48 minutes, but we're just glad that nobody got hurt." When asked of his opinion of the clubs performance Mr. Barns stated, "I know this team will be better when we hit opening night in two weeks, but Teon landed in Edmonton at one o'clock this afternoon, and we have had just one organized team practice so far, but you could already see some chemistry, particularly in how much they were rooting eachother on from the bench. Overall, I was very pleased and really can't wait for our last players to arrive."

The Chill will practice Sunday night at Grant MacEwan from 5-8pm while the team holds their final open house before the season starts. The team will also practice Tuesday and Thursday night at Eastglen High School located at 11430-68 Street, Edmonton, Alberta, T5B 1P1. All practices are open to the public.
