U.S. Nat'l Sled Hockey Team Defeats Italy, 4-0

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team received goals from four different players as it defeated Italy in its second game of the International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships here today.

"We had a good third period which is going to give us a lot of momentum going into our game against Norway on Tuesday," said Ray Maluta, head coach of Team USA. "Our youth showed in the first period by us taking the Italians for granted and we just couldn't finish, but we were able to turn it around and get the win."

Jimmy Connelly (Galloway, N.J.) tallied his second goal of the tournament after his shot from the left point deflected up and over Italian netminder Santino Stillitano at 12:54 in the first period.

Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.) doubled Team USA's lead in the middle frame after taking a feed from Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.) across the Italian blue line and ripping a shot from the right wing into the lower left corner of the net.

In the final period, team captain Chris Manns (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) tallied a power-play goal after stickhandling through Italy's defense and goaltender to put the U.S. ahead, 3-0. Taylor Lipsett (Mesquite, Texas) recorded his fourth goal in two games when he fired a wrist shot from the left side that hit the top of the net.

Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) stopped seven shots to en route to a shutout.

Following a day off on Monday (March 31), the U.S. will return to action on Tuesday (April 1) when it takes on Norway at 7 p.m. EDT at the New England Sports Center.

NOTES: The U.S. out shot Italy by a 13-7 margin ... Alexi Salamone (Grand Island, N.Y./0-2--2), Chris Manns (1-1--2) and Taylor Lipsett (1-1--2) each recorded two points today ... Lipsett is Team USA's leading point-getter with six (4-2). The U.S. is atop Pool A with a record of 2-0-0-0 ... Massachusetts Hockey, an affiliate of USA Hockey, is serving as the local organizing committee for the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships ...
