New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The New Mexico Scorpions have issued a challenge in which they need their fans' help. United Blood Services in Rio Rancho has challenged a sister center in McAllen, Texas, and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees fans to a contest as to which center will draw the most blood. The challenge is connected to when the Rio Killer Bees play in Rio Rancho against the New Mexico Scorpions on December 15th and when the Scorps visit the Valley on January 12th.
The Scorpions organization is confident their fans will step up and donate more blood than their counterparts in Rio Grande Valley . Now it is time for Scorps Nation to step up and prove it to the their CHL counterparts.
"I know we have the most passionate and giving fans in the Central Hockey League," said Scorpions general manager Rick Carden. "I expect Scorpions fans will rise to the occasion and make sure to show who has the real sting."
The Scorpions called the Killer Bees office for a response and a team spokesman refused to comment claiming Scorpions fans had no chance of winning.
Remaining dates for the challenge are December 12th and 15th at the Rio Rancho center location only.
The first 500 donors will receive free Scorpions game tickets. Donors will also receive goodie bags from community businesses as well as have the opportunity to enter a drawing to win more tickets to Scorpions' games and various Scorpions gear signed by the team. Scorpions players will be at the Rio Rancho center on December 12th, from 5 - 6 PM.
Although walk-in donors will be accepted, appointments are encouraged and can be made by calling 505-843-6227. The center is located at 2003 Southern Blvd., Suite 122 in Rio Rancho.
"This is a time of year when demand for blood increases and we want to make sure the community has the right type of blood whenever it is needed," said Charlene Smith, donor recruitment. "We thought this would be a fun way to encourage people to donate by incorporating a contest while including the support of the Scorpions. Rio Rancho is the third largest city in our state, yet it draws less blood than smaller communities in the state. We hope to change that and challenge the citizens of Rio Rancho to help us change it. Additionally, this is not a challenge we want to lose."
To add to the fun, the respective executive directors of each center have challenged each other. The executive director whose center collects the least amount of blood will serve lunch to the employees of the winning center. Elizabeth Waltman, executive director of United Blood Services New Mexico, said "I have no intention of losing and am counting on the community of Rio Rancho to rally for this event so we don't lose and ensure we have an adequate blood supply."
Most healthy people who are at least 17 years old and who weigh 110 pounds or more may give blood. Federal regulations require donors to wait 56 days between donations. Donors should eat healthy meals and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Picture ID is required.
The next Scorpions game is on Thursday, December 13th when the Scorpions host the Amarillo Gorillas. The puck will drop inside the Santa Ana Star Center at 7:15 p.m. Fans can also get ready for the annual "Salute to the Military Night" on Saturday, December 15th when the Scorps host Rio Grande Valley. New Mexico will wear special themed jersey to be auctioned off after the game, with part of the proceeds benefiting the Blue Star Mothers New Mexico Chapters.
