Whalers three-goal, second period outburst defeats Owen Sound, 6-3

PLYMOUTH - The Plymouth Whalers extended a 1-0 lead after one period with three goals in the second and the Whalers went on to defeat the Owen Sound Attack, 6-3, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday night at Compuware Arena.

Plymouth is now 6-4-1-0 and moves into third place in the OHL's West Division, one point ahead of Sarnia (6-6-0-0) and two points ahead of Saginaw (4-4-2-1). Owen Sound is now 1-10-1-0.

AJ Jenks (Wolverine Lake) led the Plymouth attack with a pair of goals and now has nine on the season. The Whalers received single goals from Vern Cooper (1), Andrew Fournier (10, which leads the team), Taylor Carnevale (2) and Chris Terry (7). Matt Carter (6) scored twice for Owen Sound and Lane MacDermid (4) added one.

Owen Sound outshot Plymouth, 37-32, but the Whalers never trailed in the game, leading 1-0 after one period and 4-1 after forty minutes.

After Jenks gave a 1-0 lead in the first period, Cooper scored from the lower rim of the left circle at 4:56 of the second period to give the Whalers a 2-0 lead. Then Fournier (one timer from the right circle on power play at 13:07) and Carnevale (left side of the Owen Sound goal at 16:59) scored to give Plymouth a 4-0 lead. Plymouth goaltender Michal Neuvirth had his shutout ruined with 39 seconds left in the second period when Carter scored from the slot.

Plymouth and Owen Sound traded two goals aside in the third period to close the scoring - Terry and Jenks for the Whalers at 6:36 and 14:56 and Carter and MacDermid at 7:30 and 18:32 respectively.

Plymouth's next home game is next Wednesday against Sarnia at 7:05 p.m. at Compuware Arena.
