Orange County Flyers News Release

(Pleasanton, CA. December 18, 2006) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that 2006 Fullerton Flyer pitching coach, Charlie Hough, has been signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers to handle similar duties for the Class A Inland Empire 66ers in the California League. Hough was instrumental in building a formidable Flyer pitching staff that dominated the GBL in the second half of the 2006 season and led the team to the GBL Championship Series before falling to the Reno Silver Sox. His efforts produced 2006 GBL Pitcher of the Year, Chris Jakubauskas, and GBL All-Star closer Wes Faust. He was also instrumental in the development of Baseball America Top Indy Prospect, and knuckleballer, Mike McTamney.

"This comes as no surprise, as the Dodgers have been after Charlie for over a year," said GBL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "Last spring, Tommy Lasorda called Ed Hart, our General Manager in Fullerton, and offered 10,000 baseballs if we would release Hough from his contract so he could become the pitching coach for the Dodgers rookie-ball affiliate in Ogden, Utah."

Before his stint with the Flyers in 2006, Hough spent a number of years coaching professionally after a storied playing career. He was formerly the pitching coach for the San Bernardino Stampede from 1996-1998. He was promoted to the Dodgers big league coaching staff during the 1998 season following the firing of manager Bill Russell and general manager Fred Claire. Hough served as the Dodgers pitching coach through 1999 before joining the New York Mets in the same capacity for the 2001 and 2002 seasons. He was the National League all-star pitching coach in 2001. He pitched in the major leagues from 1970-1980 with the Dodgers before spending the next decade with the Texas Rangers. He finished his 25-year major league career with the expansion Florida Marlins. Hough was the opening day starter and winning pitcher for the first-ever Marlins game in 1993. He finished his career with 216 big league wins.

Hough is the second GBL coach or manager to be signed by a major league organization this year, joining Yuma Scorpion's Manager Benny Castillo who was signed by the Detroit Tigers to manage their Gulf Coast League team in October.
