The Washington Nationals and Vermont Lake Monsters have extended their Player Development Contract (PDC) for the next two years, thus keeping Vermont as the New York-Penn League affiliate for Washington through at least the 2008 season, the two teams announced today.

Vermont has been the NY-Penn League affiliate of the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals since the Lake Monsters joined the league in 1994. With the Philadelphia Phillies moving its affiliate from Batavia to Williamsport, the Vermont-Montreal/Washington affiliation is now the longest current partnership in the New York-Penn League.

"We are happy to continue our long relationship with the Montreal/Washington franchise," said Vermont General Manager C.J. Knudsen. "Our dealings with the organization have always been first-class and professional."

"We are excited to extend our working relationship with the Vermont Lake Monsters for two more years," Washington Nationals President Stan Kasten said in the Nationals' official press release. "Our franchise has enjoyed its affiliation with not only the Lake Monsters, but the City of Burlington and the New York-Penn League. With our stated commitment to player development, the future for Vermont, and for our entire minor league system, is bright."

Although Vermont has struggled on the field of late, finishing below .500 each season since 2001 including a league-low record of 23-52 in 2006, "we are confident that with the Washington ownership now solidified and their stated commitment to player development, things will turn around very soon," said Knudsen.

Since beginning the partnership in 1994, Vermont has seen 46 of its players reach the Major Leagues. 18 of those 46 players were on Major League rosters during the 2006 season.
