Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Joliet, IL - Five was indeed an unlucky number for the Schaumburg Flyers on Saturday evening. The Joliet Jackhammers tallied five consecutive base hits, capped by a 3-run home run by Joliet second baseman Blake Gill off of Schaumburg starter Dave Dobosz, as part of a five run first inning which dealt the Flyers their fifth defeat in as many games by a final score of 8-3.
After winning his last start at Gary on August 29th, Dobosz (4-6) surrendered 12 hits in his five innings of work and was saddled with the loss.
Gill scored three of the Jackhammers' eight runs on a 2-for-4 night at the plate but it was DH Rob Stratton who "rocked" the Flyers literally and figuratively. In addition to his 3-for-4 performance, which included a single, an RBI double and a solo home run, Stratton also bowled over Flyers' catcher Ryan Walker in a huge collision at the plate in the first inning. Despite the drama, Stratton was called out on the play.
The Flyers had their opportunities. Trailing by five with no one out, they loaded the bases in the 4th inning on two singles and two walks but were only able to push across two runs as Jackhammers starter Eric Fussell (1-1) was able to regain his composure to set down the bottom three hitters in the Flyers line-up on a strikeout and a couple of groundouts.
Schaumburg completes its regular season tomorrow sending LHP Rick DeHart to the mound to close out the season before heading into the divisional playoffs which begin Tuesday night at Alexian Field.
The first half champion Flyers have already secured a spot in the postseason. The 2006 Northern League playoffs will kickoff on September 5th and 6th with Schaumburg hosting two first round games. Both games will begin at 7:05 PM.
