af2 names weekly award winners

July 11, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

South Georgia wide receiver/defensive back BLAKE SAUNDERS, Birmingham quarterback ROBERT KENT, and Quad City defensive specialist TY ARDOIN have been named the U.S. Army Ironman, Schutt Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 15 of the 2006 season. In addition to these three awards, the recipient of the Cutters Catch of the Week Award goes to Louisville wide receiver/linebacker DENNIS FRYZEL. The Catch of the Week is a new honor that highlights the player who makes the best catch of the week.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Saunders (5-9, 185, Delaware State) was an impact player on both sides of the ball for South Georgia in the team's 51-22 home win against Bossier-Shreveport in Week 15. The victory was just the second of the season for the Wildcats. On offense, the af2 rookie from Delaware State had three receptions for 47 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown grab. Defensively, Saunders registered four tackles, including one tackle for loss that resulted in a safety. He also had one interception that he returned 26 yards. This is the first Ironman of the Week honor of Saunders' career.

SCHUTT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kent (6-4, 220, Jackson State) led Birmingham to an impressive, 84-46, road victory at Rio Grande Valley in Week 15. The af2 rookie quarterback put on quite a personal performance for the Steeldogs as he accomplished the rare triple of throwing, catching, and rushing for a touchdown in a single game. Kent accounted for seven total touchdowns in all, including four touchdown passes. The former Jackson State Tiger was near perfect through the air, completing 15-of-17 passes for 221 yards with no interceptions. Kent also rushed for two touchdowns and caught a 6-yard scoring pass. This is the first Offensive Player of the Week honor of his career.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Ardoin (6-0, 200, Texas Tech), a three-year af2 veteran, was a major player on defense for Quad City in the team's 59-21 home win against Tennessee Valley in Week 15. The former Red Raider tallied a game-high 9.0 tackles (all solo), including two fumble recoveries, one interception and three pass breakups. Ardoin's efforts were a big reason why the Steamwheelers surrendered a season-low 21 points to keep their af2 postseason hopes alive. This is the first ADT Defensive Player of the Week Award of Ardoin's career.

CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK

Louisville wide receiver/linebacker Dennis Fryzel (5-9, 195, Valdosta State), who is in his fourth season in the af2, is the Week 15 recipient of the Cutters Catch of the Week Award, a weekly honor that has emerged this year to highlight the player who makes the best catch of the week. Fryzel's catch was an 18-yard touchdown grab in the second quarter that propelled him over the dasherboards. He finished the game with four catches for 42 yards. Fryzel also scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. The veteran's efforts were key to the Fire's 63-55 home win against Memphis in a rematch of the 2005 ArenaCup.
