Charlotte Sting acquire Edwige Lawson from Houston in exchange for draft pick

The Charlotte Sting have acquired guard Edwige Lawson from the Houston Comets in exchange for Charlotte's third round pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft, it was announced today by General Manager Trudi Lacey.

"We have strengthened our point guard position by acquiring Edwige," said Lacey. "She has experience in the league playing with Houston last season as well as a wealth of international experience. Her experience and leadership will be great assets to our team."

Lawson played 17 games with Houston after being signed on June 1, 2005. She tallied 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists with the Comets. A 5-6 guard, she was originally signed by New York on April 4, 2005, and played in two games with the Liberty.

A native of France, Lawson is currently playing for VBM-SGAU in Samara, Russia. She has averaged 9.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 35.4 minutes and has helped her team advance to the EuroLeague Final Four. This is her second consecutive season playing for VBM-SGAU as she averaged 9.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting .552 from the floor for the team in EuroLeague play in 2004-05.

Additionally, she has played for USVO and Aix en Provence BB in France and has represented her homeland in several international competitions over the course of her career.

The Charlotte Sting now have two first round picks (third and 10th overall) plus a second round selection (27th overall) in the 2006 WNBA Draft. ESPN2 will broadcast the first round beginning at 1:00 p.m. on April 5.

The Charlotte Sting's 10th anniversary season begins on May 20 at Charlotte Bobcats Arena as they host the Chicago Sky at 6 p.m. Season tickets are available for as low as $99 and are on sale now.
