Memphis, Tenn. - St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter was named the National League Cy Young Award winner on Thursday afternoon.
Carpenter is the first Cardinals hurler to garner the award since 1970 when Hall of Famer Bob Gibson won the coveted award. For the season Carpenter went 21-5 with a 2.83 ERA and edged Florida Marlins right-hander Dontrelle Willis by just 20 points in the balloting. Carpenter set new career-highs in wins (21), complete games (7), shutouts (4), innings pitched (241.7), strikeouts (213) and ERA (2.83) in '05.
In 2003, Carpenter appeared in three games for Memphis on a rehab assignment and finished with a 5.40 ERA in just 8.1 innings. The three games he pitched in for Memphis were the only three games he appeared in during â03. He underwent shoulder surgery in July that summer to remove scar tissue from a previous operation he had in September 2002.
The former first round (15th overall) pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993 and made his Major League debut in 1997 with the Jays.
