Talons team up with law enforcement for Red Cross

September 17, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Gallup Outlaws News Release

Gallup, NM. The ABA Gallup Talons professional basketball team and Gallup area law enforcement teamed up for an exhibition game of basketball at Gallup Junior High School to raise funds for the Gallup Chapter of the American Red Cross. Nearly 300 spectators and family members turned out to see members of the Gallup Police Department, the District Attorney's office and the Gallup office of the FBI team up with members of the Gallup Talons to raise money and extend themselves to the community. Also lacing up the sneakers for the game was Gallup Mayor Bob Rosebrough.

Rather than the Talons play law enforcement, two teams were selected by combining all of the talent that took the floor. Chief of Police Sylvester Stanley coached one team; Asst Talons Coach Thomas took the other and the Talons Head Coach, Clayton Shields, refereed the game. At the end of the four 15 minute running clock quarters, the final score was 133-131.

The highlight of the evening was when team owner Joe Kolb presented Ann and John Henderson of the American Red Cross a check from donations made by the spectators, the team and the ABA. "The Talons and the league are fantastic for doing this for the American Red Cross," said Ann Henderson. Stanley echoed Henderson's sentiments.

"The ultimate cause is to help the victims of the hurricane," said Stanley. "It was great interacting with pro basketball players." Also introduced to the Gallup community for the first time was the Gallup Talons dance team coached by former University of Nevada, Las Vegas team member, Christy Tiley. Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
