
Monarchs forward Tangela Smith undergoes successful surgery

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., FEB. 23, 2005 - The Sacramento Monarchs today announce that starting forward, Tangela Smith underwent successful arthroscopic surgery this morning to her left knee.
Due to an ongoing problem with chronic knee pain, Smith was advised to undergo surgery to explore her condition. The surgery, performed by Team Doctor and UC Davis physician Eric Heiden, showed there was no significant findings other then normal wear and tear. A complete recovery is expected.
Smith, who has played in 193 consecutive games with the Monarchs, was second on the team in scoring in 2004 averaging 11.2 points per game and also averaged 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 steals, 0.7 blocks and 26.7 minutes per game.
"We are relieved to know that Tangela has been given a clean bill of health," said Monarchs Head Coach and General Manager John Whisenant. "We're looking forward to her coming back this season and playing with as much intensity and determination as last year."
Smith will remain in Sacramento for the next 4-6 weeks in order to rehabilitate her knee and recover for the upcoming 2005 WNBA season.
The Sacramento Monarchs first regular season home game will be on Saturday, June 4 at ARCO Arena when the Monarchs host the Los Angeles Sparks at 1:00 p.m. in a game to be nationally televised on ABC.
