Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (February 1, 2005) â The Burlington Bees Baseball Club was recognized with the "Greatest Tourism Contribution" Award from the Burlington/West Burlington Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber Annual Dinner on Friday night. The award was given not only for the Bees consistent contributions in drawing visitors to our community, but also for fundraising opportunities afforded to local non-profit groups and the enhancement of the overall quality of life of the area. The Great River Gateway Project, which secured $5.25 million from the Vision Iowa Board toward $27 million in improvements to the area which includes the current Community Field renovation, also received the "Best Partnership" award at the dinner. The club received a plaque that will proudly hang in the souvenir stand this season.
"It is a great honor to receive this award," Bees General Manager Chuck Brockett said. "We would like to thank the Chamber and the people that nominated us for their support. We have really focused on attracting fans from all over Southeast Iowa and Western Illinois and have seen some positive results. Our strong relationship with our Major League affiliate, the Kansas City Royals, and the growing popularity of Minor League Baseball has also allowed us to draw more fans from all over the Midwest and even the country. We are proud that these factors allow us to have a positive impact on our local economy and the quality of life."
"Having the Bees is such a great asset when we look to attract visitors to our community," Wendy Hogan, the Director of the Burlington Area Convention and Tourism Bureau said. "When I travel to trade shows and conventions, talking about the Bees is a great way to distinguish Burlington from the other communities that are our size. Not only is the team a great attraction, but the organization has been a great local partner for events like Friday Fest. I can't wait for the season to start up again."
The Bees will open the season on April 7th in Clinton. The first home game will be on Tuesday, April 12th at 7:00 against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The official Chamber Friday Fest returns to Community Field three times in 2005 on June 24th, July 15th, and August 26th. The annual Burlington/West Burlington Chamber Night with fireworks sponsored by the CTB will be on Friday, June 29th. For season ticket information, fans can contact the Bees at (319) 754-5705.
