Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER, Colo. â Steve Govett, General Manager of the Colorado Mammoth lacrosse team, will help send off over 60 cyclists as they ride from Denver, Colorado to Winnipeg, Canada as part of the 11th annual Cycle of Hope starting on Monday, July 19th at 6:00 a.m at First Baptist Church, located at 13th and Grant. Originally from Burnaby, British Columbia, Govett will provide inspiration as the cyclists begin their first day of riding and head towards his native country.
The 1,000 mile, thirteen-day ride will help raise money for the Habitat for Humanity of Winnipeg. Each cyclist raises at least $2,000 for Habitat from individual or corporate donations with an overall total goal of $150,000. Cyclists pay a registration fee to cover their travel costs so every dollar raised goes toward building Habitat houses. This year, enough funds will be raised to build two new homes in the Winnipeg area. The cyclists ride approximately 80 to 120 miles per day and sleep and eat in towns or cities with affiliate Habitat offices and/or churches and community centers.
"As a Canadian, I am proud to support events like Cycle of Hope that not only raises money for a worthy agency in my home country but allows individuals to do so in a meaningful and rewarding way. Riding a bike for over 1,000 miles is a huge athletic achievement and I commend everyone that is participating. I am honored that I can be a part of it and wish everyone a fun, safe trip," remarked Steve Govett.
Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to building decent, affordable homes in partnership with qualified low-income families and volunteers. Homeowner families invest 300-500 hours of "sweat equity" labor into building their homes, and purchase the homes with zero interest mortgages. All mortgage payments are reinvested to fund construction of future Habitat homes. Worldwide, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 160,000 homes in partnership with families in 100 countries.
Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg is the largest Habitat affiliate in Canada. They have renovated or built 104 homes since 1987. Habitat "affiliates" are locally run organizations affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International. For more information, visit www.habitat.mb.ca.
