Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Fort Worth â The Fort Worth Brahmas solidified their goaltending position for the upcoming 2004-2005 CHL season with the signing of netminder Dan Murphy to a contract on Friday morning.
Murphy, 30, will bring with him to Fort Worth an outstanding professional resume. He has six seasons of pro hockey under his belt, as he has split time in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and the American Hockey League (AHL).
Last season, Murphy was the number one man in net for the Alaska Aces of the ECHL. He started 51 regular season games for the Aces, posting a record of 27-20-3 with a 2.75 goals against average and a .898 save percentage. In the 2004 Kelly Cup playoffs, Murphy led the eighth seeded Aces to a first round upset over the top seeded San Diego Gulls. Although Alaska then lost in the second round the eventual Kelly Cup champion Idaho Steelheads, Murphy still finished the postseason with a 4-3 record and an impressive 2.62 goals against average and .914 save percentage.
A native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Murphy turned pro in the fall of 1998. Since then, he has been in net for four different ECHL teams (Peoria, Trenton, Lexington, Alaska) and five different AHL clubs (Worcester, Quebec, Philadelphia, Springfield, Milwaukee). In 183 career ECHL regular season games, he has a record of 101-66-12 with a 2.67 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. In 69 career AHL games, he has a record of 25-28-5 with a 3.15 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. Altogether, Murphy has a professional regular season career record of 126-94-17 with a 2.79 goals against average and a .905 save percentage.
Murphy's best ECHL season came in 2001-2002 when he played in 45 game for the Trenton Titans. He rolled to a record of 30-10-4, leading all ECHL goaltenders in wins and finishing second in the 2001-2002 ECHL MVP voting. His best AHL campaign came in 1999-2000 when he split time with the Quebec Citadelles and the Philadelphia Phantoms. His AHL record that season was 17-13-2.
Included in Murphy's numerous career highlights are two All Star team selections. He was a member of the 1999-2000 AHL All Star team while playing the majority of that season with the Quebec Citadelles. He was also selected to the 2001-2002 ECHL All Star team when he was a member of the Trenton Titans.
On two occasions, Murphy has signed NHL contracts. In April of 1998, he signed a one year contract with the St. Louis Blues. In March of 2000, he inked a three year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Murphy, 6'2", 191, laid the foundation for his successful professional career with four seasons of collegiate hockey at Clarkson University (NCAA-ECAC) from 1994-1998. He started all four years that he played for the Golden Knights, compiling a collegiate career record of 62-28-5. He was a 3 time ECAC All Star, and a two time NCAA All American (1995-1996, 1996-1997). His best individual season for the Potsdam, New York based school came in his junior season of 1996-1997, when he put up a 27-9-0 record with a 2.33 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.
Murphy, who will come to Fort Worth his wife Deanna, is excited to be joining the Brahmas organization.
"I have heard nothing but great things about the city of Fort Worth. After spending last season in Anchorage, Alaska, I'm ready for some warm weather. But, more importantly, I want to get down there and help the Brahmas become a winning team. Al Sims is a respected head coach, and I believe we are going to have a successful season," he stated.
Sims is elated to welcome Murphy into the fold.
"Dan Murphy is a proven professional goaltender. He has had team and individual success in college and at the ECHL and AHL levels. With his credentials, he has a chance to be one of the top goaltenders in the CHL. The goaltending position should be a strength for our team this season," he said.
Murphy joins Justin Laverdiere (RW), Jorin Welsh (D), Jan Jas (RW), Chad Woollard (LW), Joey Bastien (C), Derrell Upton (RW), Aaron Davis (C), Steve Reid (F), Adam Davis (D), and Tyler Nilsson (G) as players signed by Fort Worth for the 2004-2005 season.
