Phoenix Mercury guard Anna DeForge named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, July 6 – Anna DeForge of the Phoenix Mercury was named the WNBA Player of the Week for games played Monday, June 28 through Sunday, July 4.

DeForge averaged 20.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.00 steals and 37.7 minutes while shooting 59.5 (22-for 37) percent from the field and 66.7 (8-for-12) percent from behind the arc in helping the Mercury to a 2-1 record on the week. She also connected on all ten of her free-throw attempts on the week. DeForge is currently averaging 14.2 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.69 steals per game and is ranked third in the WNBA in three-point field goal percentage (46.5) and 13th in free-throw percentage (85.7).

DeForge began the week against San Antonio on June 29 by matching her career-high in points as she scored 26 on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line in the win over the Silver Stars. Two days later, the Mercury picked up their eighth win of the year, matching Phoenix's win total for the entire 2003 WNBA season, in a 12-point win over the Charlotte Sting. DeForge had 18 points, three assists and three steals in the victory while shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the three-point line. DeForge finished her week with another 18 point outing to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals on July 3 in a 61-60 loss to Indiana.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Dawn Staley, Houston's Michelle Snow, Indiana's Tamika Catchings, Los Angeles' Mwadi Mabika, Minnesota's Katie Smith, Sacramento's Rebekkah Brunson, Seattle's Lauren Jackson and Washington's Chamique Holdsclaw.

The WNBA began its much-anticipated eighth season with ratings for ABC's first four telecasts up 14 percent from a year ago. The season-opening telecast featuring the Phoenix Mercury at the Connecticut Sun was the highest rated WNBA game (regular season or playoffs) ever on ABC.
