Sounds Drop Opener, 6-3April 8, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) Nashville Sounds
The Sounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead courtesy of solo homers by first baseman Carlos Rivera in the bottom of the second and second sacker Terry Shumpert. Both longballs came off Sky Sox starter Jason Young.
Colorado Springs stormed out to a 4-2 lead with a four-run fourth against Sounds starter Nelson Figueroa. With one down, Garrett Atkins singled and scored a batter later on Andy Tracys double into the right field corner. Tracy scored later in the inning on a Brad Hawpe groundout to knot the score at two apiece. The Sky Sox continued the barrage by capitalizing on a fielding error by Nashville shortstop Tomas de la Rosa to plate two unearned runs.
Hawpe tagged Figueroa for a leadoff homer in the sixth inning that cleared the 24-foot high wall in dead center to extend the Colorado Springs advantage to 5-2. The Sounds mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to gain back the run. Carlos Rivera was hit by a pitch and came around to score on Chris Trubys RBI double into the left field corner.
Colorado Springs tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a two-out balk by Sounds reliever Hector Almonte that allowed J.D. Closser to trot home from third.
Young (1-0) picked up the victory after yielding two runs in five innings of work in his second consecutive Opening Day start for the Sky Sox. Tim Harikkala worked a scoreless ninth to earn his first save for Colorado Springs. Figueroa (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) in his six innings of work. Four of the six hits against him went for extra bases.
The Sounds and Sky Sox meet again on Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the second game of the four-game set at Greer Stadium. Left-hander Dave Williams makes his first start of the season for Nashville. Hell be opposed by Colorado Springs right-hander Aaron Cook.
