NEW YORK (Thursday, March 4, 2004) - Major League Soccer today announced that it has entered into an exclusive multi-year deal with The Upper Deck Company to produce Official League trading card sets with the new edition to be released in June 2004. The 90-card collection features game-worn soccer uniform and autographed trading cards. The company also plans on offering select memorabilia items from MLS star players.
"We are excited to partner with the market leader, Upper Deck, on the 2004 card set which will become an instant collectible," said Stu Crystal, MLS Vice President of Marketing and Consumer Products. "The look and quality of these cards will not only make them a popular addition to MLS' stable of consumer products but they will also prove a great vehicle for fans to learn more about MLS' star players."
The 2004 set will feature the rookie card of D.C. United's 14-year-old phenom Freddy Adu, the youngest player in the modern history of American professional team sports. Adu will also be one of several players who will have his game-worn jersey memorialized in a special series of uniform cards.
"Upper Deck is recognized for creating great products that sports enthusiasts around the world enjoy," said Joe Fallon, Group Brand Manager for the Upper Deck Company. "This agreement represents a tremendous opportunity to reintroduce our products featuring exciting players like Freddy Adu, Landon Donovan, Taylor Twellman, and Carlos Ruiz, to millions of soccer fans throughout North America."
Major League Soccer's ninth season kicks off on Saturday, April 3 with all 10 teams in action. Opening Day will begin with the 4:00 p.m. ET nationally televised match from RFK Stadium between D.C. United, featuring new Head Coach Peter Nowak and Freddy Adu hosting Landon Donovan and the defending MLS Cup champion San Jose Earthquakes live on ABC Sports.
