February 27, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
(Westport, Conn., February 27, 2004) â The St. Louis Steamers made Cal Thomas, a forward from SIU-Edwardsville, the first overall selection in the Territorial Round of the 2004 MISL Amateur Draft, held on Friday at the Renaissance Airport Hotel in St. Charles, MO.
Thomas, a native of Rochester, IL, was a 2003 First Team All-American, and First Team All-Region and All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection. He scored 13 goals and 32 points in 2003 for SIU-Edwardsville, also the alma mater of Steamers player/coach Daryl Doran.
The Dallas Sidekicks chose midfielder Trey Vaut of Oral Roberts University with the second Territorial pick (third overall). Vaut, a Dallas native, was named to the All-Mid Continent First Team for the third straight time in 2003, and earned Mid-Con Offensive Player of the Year honors.
San Diego used the fourth Territorial pick on midfielder Scott Burcar (Seattle-Washington), and Kansas City (Drew Perkins, M, UKMC) and Baltimore (Marco Angelini, F, UMBC) selected local products with the fifth and sixth selections.
Philadelphia and Milwaukee completed the Territorial phase of the draft with the selection of two Honorable Mention All-Americans, as the KiXX selected forward Damien Pottinger of Duquesne University and the Wave tabbed Tighe Dombrowski, a midfielder from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Pottinger was also the first overall selection by the Edmonton Drillers in the recent A-League draft.
The University of Missouri â Kansas City led all schools with three selections in the draft, all by the Kansas City Comets. The Comets also picked two players from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The University of North Carolina-Greensboro and Long Island University both had two players picked.
The Fourth and final round of the draft featured the selection of forward Joseph Ngwenya by the San Diego Sockers. Ngwenya, from Coastal Carolina University, led all NCAA Division IA scorers with 21 goals and 56 points in 2003. Rinaldo Chambers of Saint Peter's College, selected by Philadelphia in the Fourth Round, ranked ninth in the nation in scoring a year ago.
Of the 40 players selected in the five-round draft (territorial round, four numerical rounds), 31 were either midfielders or forwards. Six defenders and three goalkeepers were also selected.
Five selections, including Ngwenya, Jeremiah White (Philadelphia's first-round pick out of Wake Forest), Attila Vendegh (Second Round, San Diego, Old Dominion), David Wagenfuhr (Second Round, Milwaukee, Creighton University), and Adrian Cann (Fourth Round, Milwaukee, University of Louisville), were All-Americans in 2003.
