Riverhawks Holding Out

March 19, 2002 - A-League (A-League)
Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release

While all the other teams have been announcing of their recent signings, the Riverhawks have been relatively quiet this off-season. We found that they’ve been holding out on their fans. In fact, they have been quite busy. That all changes with this release. The first signing was of former MLS Galaxy and Earthquake signee, Gabe Eastman. Eastman, who formerly played with the Nashville Metros in the A-League, will add to the defensive rebuilding of the Riverhawks. Also on the defensive side, the Hawks signed former Hershey Wildcat Fred DeGand. A starter for the A-League runners-up, DeGand comes to Cincinnati with impressive credentials. Add to that defense, Ben Fisher, who, for the past three seasons, played for the Nashville Metros. A graduate of Belmont University in Nashville, Fisher was their most valuable player his junior and senior years. Two All-American college prospects that have signed are Henry Beetoe, Tiffen College and Kirk Bevington, Francis Marion College. Beetoe, a two-time NAIA All-American and Bevington, a Division II All-American, add depth to the defensive squad.

The first midfielder added was former Pittsburgh standout, Bobby Meyer. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Meyers was originally drafted by the Colorado Rapids. Meyers was a 2-year starter for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds before sitting out last season. His love of soccer has brought him back to the game. Daniel Alverez, an All-American from Furman University who was recently drafted by the Colorado Rapids, has agreed to a contract with the Riverhawks. Alverez move into a mid-field that includes last season’s 2nd leading scorer, Simon Lowey and Shawn Rockey, who has been with the Riverhawks since their first season. Connally Edozian was discovered during the Riverhawks try-out in February. A Nigerian, who last season played with FV Dresden Nord of the German Oberliga, Edozian impressed the coaching staff and has signed a 2-year contract. The final midfielder signing is Davidson College and Cincinnati native Jon Teterick. A strong shooter, Tetirick led Davidson in goals and points the past two seasons.

Although only one new forward has signed, he is a big one. Both in size, 6’3” and 200 pounds and experience, 13 international caps with Barbados National team, Ryan Lucas has agreed to a three-year contract with the Hawks. He has formally played with Galway United of the Irish league and with the Boston Bulldogs of the USL. Lucas has 2 goals and 15 assists for his national team. Last season in Boston, he scored 12 goals. Along with leading scorer Marcel Matis, the Riverhawks look to have an explosive front line.

The Riverhawks look strong on paper and hope that it transforms into a play-off trip this year. The Riverhawks open the season May 4th against the Milwaukee Rampage at home. For more information, contact Lauren Westkamp at 513-591-4622.
