2002 af2 Ironman of the Year? Re-Elect Harvey

July 15, 2002 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Richmond Speed News Release

WR/DB Kevin Harvey defines the standard by which Ironmen in Arena Football are measured. Harvey earned Ironman of the Game honors 3 consecutive weeks, 6 times overall (to date), and took af2 Ironman of the Week honors in Week 8 vs. Greensboro. The defending 2001 af2 Ironman of the Year continues to do it all. Harvey ranks in the top 7 in af2 in both scoring and touchdowns, an impressive feat for a 2-way player in categories dominated by Offensive Specialists. Ranking as the Speed's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and rushing, Harvey is deceptively elusive, with great field vision, and exceptional run-after-the-catch ability. He plays a sharp, smart defensive game in the secondary, contributes mightily to the special teams, and can even be counted on to throw the occasional touchdown pass off of the halfback option. In this election year - in this race - the incumbent deserves re-election. A breakdown of Kevin Harvey's SIX Ironman-winning performances thus far in 2002: * The 3-year af2 veteran won his first game Ironman award of 2002 in Week 5 vs. Norfolk, with 2 interceptions and a pass break-up on defense, to go with a recovery of teammate Walter Shelton's fumble for a touchdown, a TD reception, and a 21-yard TD pass to OS Earl Hicks. * He began defense of his 2001 af2 Ironman of the Year Award in earnest by garnering league honors for his brilliant all-around effort in the clutch against the Prowlers in Week 8. Harvey scored four of Richmond's five touchdowns down the stretch to overcome a 20-point deficit, including the game-winner with 10 seconds remaining. Harvey was crucial defensively, logging 3.5 tackles and a pass deflection. * The Temple graduate again won Ironman of the Game in Week 10 vs. Albany with a yeoman's effort of 8 grabs for 75 yards and 3 TDs, 3 rushes for 19 yards, 5 tackles and 2 pass deflections. * In Week 11 vs. Rochester, he was a one-man wrecking crew – rushing for 39 yards and a score, notching 117 yards and 2 TDs receiving, and adding 6 solo tackles on defense. * Landed fifth Ironman with 5 rushes for 27 yards an 3 TDs, 8 catches for 98 yards and a TD, a 26-yard kick return, and 4 tackles defensively vs. Mohegan in Week 13. * Ironman number 6 followed a clutch performance at Albany in Week 14 (7 receptions for 65 yards and a TD, 10 yards rushing with a TD, 2 kick returns for 40 yards, 3.5 tackles, and a fumble recovery for a TD).
