Arkansas Twisters (9-5) 83, Hawaiian Islanders (3-11) 73

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Hawaii and Arkansas combined for the third-most points in league history, but the Twisters held off the Islanders 83-73 in a Friday shootout at the Alltel Arena before 11,176 fans.

Hawaii led 39-34 at halftime, but Arkansas dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Islanders 21-6. ROBERT KEMFORT opened the third-period scoring on a four-yard run for the Islanders' only points of the quarter. Arkansas responded with three straight scoring drives, two of which were set up by Hawaii turnovers. RICKY HEBERT, who threw for 243 yards and nine touchdowns in the game, hooked up twice with LENNIE JOHNSON and once with KEVIN WILLIAMS to help Arkansas take control. In the fourth quarter, both teams exchanged blows, but Hawaii was unable to come back from a 10-point deficit.

ADT Defensive Player of the Game CLAY ARNOLD recorded an assist and recovered a fumble that led to one of the Twisters' third-quarter scores. Arkansas' DEADERICK CAIL had 5.5 tackles and an interception.

DARNELL SMALL had a season-high 64 yards rushing, including a 37-yard run to earn Ironman of the Game honors. Johnson ended the game with five receptions for a career-high 139 yards and four touchdowns, and also had 143 kickoff return yards.

Hawaii QB DARNELL ARCENEAUX, who had 88 yards and three touchdowns rushing and 249 yards in the air, led Hawaii's offensive attack. He threw for five touchdowns. Arceneaux's three rushing touchdowns increased his season total to 24, an af2 season record. Taylor caught eight passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns to lead all receivers.

Charleston Swamp Foxes (7-7) 36, Augusta Stallions (11-3) 34

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Swamp Foxes kept their playoff hopes alive with a thrilling 36-34 victory over the Augusta Stallions Saturday night, despite scoring just two points in the second half.

In front of 4,106 fans, Charleston built a 34-28 lead at halftime, but only mustered a MICHAEL SETZER safety in the third quarter. That safety would be the difference, however, because Augusta only managed to reach the end zone on a 36-yard TIM DUMAS touchdown reception with 9:42 left in the fourth quarter. KEITH GISPERT missed a would-be winning field goal from 42 yards as time expired.

Kickoff returner BILLY COOK returned two kickoffs 57 yards for touchdowns, tallying 230 yards in kickoff returns on the night. He added 56 yards on missed field goal returns for a total of 286 return yards, setting a new team record. He also made two tackles on defense to earn Ironman of the Game honors.

Defensively, the Swamp Foxes were led by co-ADT Defensive Players of the Game PRESTON VINSON and JAMIE HATTLEY. Vinson recorded three tackles and a pair of sacks. Hattley led Charleston with 5.5 tackles, including five solo stops and half a tackle for loss.

Dumas, who was named the Offensive Player of the Game, led the Stallions with 11 receptions for 140 yards and three touchdowns. He also made two tackles. Augusta QB GLEN GAUNTT completed 15-of-27 passes for 185 yards with four scores and one interception.

Norfolk Nighthawks (8-6) 68, Roanoke Steam (7-8) 33

NORFOLK, Va. – Nighthawks QB CHRIS WALLACE threw seven touchdown passes, including four to TRAVIS BURNS, to lead Norfolk to a 68-33 win over the Roanoke Steam in front of 4,402 fans at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

With 5:32 remaining in the first quarter, ANTHONY HINES caught a nine-yard pass for a score to pull Roanoke within 14-13. However, Wallace hooked up with ANTWON ROBINSON less than two minutes later to put Norfolk ahead 20-13. That score sparked a 26-0 Nighthawk run that gave the home team a 40-13 lead with 52 seconds remaining in the half. Wallace passed for four TDs in the run, with Burns scoring on receptions of 35 and 24 yards. Roanoke was unable to recover in the second half, as Wallace helped the Nighthawks outscore the Steam 28-14 in the second stanza.

Robinson earned Ironman of the Game honors as he broke up seven passes, made 4.5 tackles, recorded an interception and hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Burns caught six passes for 123 yards and four touchdowns, rushed for nine yards, returned kicks for another 27 yards and amassed 4.5 tackles on defense.

Hines led all receivers with nine catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Hines also recovered a fumble for a score while totaling one total tackle. Roanoke used two quarterbacks, MICHAEL THOMAS and SEAN PETERSON, who completed 11 passes each. Thomas accounted for all four Roanoke touchdowns on the night (three passing, one rushing).

ADT Defensive Player of the Game CHRIS POINTER recorded eight tackles (seven solo) and six pass breakups. Banks, CHRIS LAWRENCE, FARREL PAYTON and ABDUL SHABAZZ-WIGGINS all recovered fumbles for the Nighthawks.

Richmond Speed (11-3) 46, Greensboro Prowlers (3-12) 21

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Speed used 27 unanswered second-quarter points to open a 34-14 halftime lead before rolling to a 46-21 win over Greensboro in front of 6,850 people at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Speed scored five straight touchdowns, four in the second and one in the third, turning a 14-7 deficit into a 40-14 lead. JEFF TOWNSLEY rattled off a hat trick with three consecutive touchdown grabs as Richmond outscored the Prowlers 34-0 over the course of 20 minutes and 47 seconds.

Greensboro QB TRAVIS PENDER finished just 12-of-34 for 115 yards, one touchdown and an interception. ANTOINE CALLOWAY led Greensboro with three catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. JERMAINE TONEY was the top defensive performer for the Prowlers with 4.5 tackles, two pass breakups, a blocked kick and an interception.

ADT Defensive Player of the Game WALTER SHELTON logged 1.5 tackles, an assist for a loss and two pass deflections. Four different Speed defenders registered sacks. TIM JONES led the Speed with 4.5 tackles (including 1.5 for losses of 10 yards) and added a 10-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Game MVP Townsley caught six passes for 119 yards and four touchdowns – including a 35-yard strike late in the second quarter. KEVIN HARVEY added four catches for 36 yards while rookie WR/DB JAY DEE FLYNN caught two passes for 19 yards in his Speed debut. QB BOB BEES turned in 154 yards passing on 11-of-24 passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Ironman of the Game LAWRENCE LEWIS had an 18-yard touchdown catch to go with two tackles, a forced fumble, a blocked field goal attempt and a sack.

Tallahassee Thunder (9-5) 58, Columbus Wardogs (3-11) 42

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Using MESIAH PORTER's four rushing touchdowns, the Tallahassee Thunder clinched a playoff spot with a 58-42 victory over Columbus in front of 3153 fans Saturday.

After exchanging touchdowns early in the first quarter, the Thunder managed to open up a 30-7 lead on the strength of three unanswered scoring drives in the first two quarters. JEFF WELSH got one back for Columbus on a one-yard run and, after SYDNEY MADISON restored the Thunder's lead on a six-yard fumble recovery, the Wardogs scored twice within the final minute of the half to cut the deficit to 38-28 at the break.

Tallahassee's defense set up shop in the third quarter, holding the Wardogs scoreless, while the Thunder managed to add 12 more points on TDs by Porter and JAMES DICKERSON. CLIFTON ROBINSON and J.T. THOMAS caught touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to give Columbus a glimmer of hope, but Porter rumbled in for his fourth rushing score with 32 seconds remaining to end the threat.

Porter was named the game MVP after amassing 45 yards rushing and scoring four times. Porter also added two receptions for 13 yards. JAMES DICKERSON led the Thunder's receiving corps with four receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

Columbus' Robinson was the game's Ironman with 115 yards receiving and two touchdowns on offense and an interception on defense. Welsh threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns before being replaced by BILLY LUCKIE. Tallahassee's TYRONN JOHNSON was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game, registering two tackles and a sack.

Albany Conquest (11-3) 41, New Haven Ninjas (4-10) 33

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Albany Conquest ended a two-game losing skid with a 41-33 victory over the New Haven Ninjas in front of 6,191 fans at Pepsi Arena Saturday.

After a low-scoring first half in which each team mustered only one touchdown, the Conquest exploded for a 20-point third quarter that gave Albany a 27-12 lead heading into the final period. In the fourth quarter, New Haven's offense got a spark from CHRIS BODEN, who threw two touchdown passes. However, the Conquest managed to match the Ninjas' offensive output as JASON MATTES and COREY HILL each caught RYAN VENA touchdown strikes. New Haven's ANTHONY COMER concluded the scoring with a one-yard run with 30 seconds left.

Hill and Vena shared game MVP honors. Hill caught seven passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Vena completed 18-of-29 passes for 197 yards and four scores. Mattes was the game's Ironman. The Conquest receiver caught six passes for 42 yards, including two for touchdowns. On defense, Mattes registered two tackles and a pass breakup.

MATT VITTENGL was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with 2.5 tackles, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick that he returned for a touchdown.

Comer led the Ninjas on offense and defense. Offensively, Comer caught eight passes for 63 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another score. On defense, he registered a tackle, an assist and an interception.

Cape Fear Wildcats (12-2) 36, Carolina Rhinos (3-11) 18

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cape Fear managed to hold off a spirited Carolina come back and scored the final 21 points of the game to overturn an 18-15 deficit and take a 36-18 victory over the Rhinos in front of 5,342 fans Saturday.

The Wildcats opened up an early 15-0 lead on the efforts of a 14-yard EDDIE MILLER touchdown grab, a JEFF HIGGINS one-yard run and GARY KRAL's 30-yard field goal. After a penalty nullified a successful onside kick by Cape Fear, Carolina got on the board with a field goal, then pulled within 15-10 on ROBERT GARTH's 21-yard interception return with just 21 seconds left in the quarter.

NICK JOHNSON opened the second half with a 54-yard kickoff return for touchdown to give Carolina a 18-15 lead, its first of the game. On the ensuing kickoff, SETH GUTZ returned the ball 46 yards to the end zone, putting the Wildcats back on top 22-18. Cape Fear's defense then took control and shut out the Rhinos for the remainder of the game. Gutz added to the Wildcats' lead with 6:42 to play in the fourth with a 28-yard grab. RUSS LINDGREN completed the scoring with a five-yard run in the final minute.

Johnson finished the game with 107 return yards, including the 54-yard runback for touchdown, and 47 yards receiving en route to being named Offensive Player of the Game. Gutz was the Ironman of the Game with three receptions for 37 yards and one touchdown, a kickoff return for 46 yards and a score and a tackle on defense. WILMONT PERRY and Lindgren combined for 78 rushing yards to lead the Wildcats.

CLARENCE MONIBA was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game after registering six tackles and five passes defended for Cape Fear. E.J. BURT added 1.5 sacks, increasing his season record total to 26.5.

Florida Firecats (8-6) 46, Pensacola Barracudas (6-8) 40 – overtime

ESTERO, Fla. – ANTHONY DIXON's six-yard run with 8:53 left in overtime gave Florida a 46-40 victory over Pensacola with 6,221 fans on hand at TECO Arena Saturday.

A frantic final minute of regulation set up the overtime finish. Florida held a slim 32-27 lead after TERRELL SUTTON caught a 27-yard pass with 3:42 to play. JERRIAN JAMES responded with a 35-yard touchdown catch at the 53-second mark to put the Barracudas back in front 33-32. However, just 13 seconds later, the Firecats regained control on a 30-yard scoring play to ANTHONY DIXON. On the ensuing possession, Pensacola took the ball 30 yards and JASPER PENDERGRASS capped off the drive with a two-yard run to send the game into overtime.

In OT, Florida took the ball at its 19-yard line after Pensacola lost possession on downs. After a pass interference call and a seven-yard pass play put Florida at the Barracudas' six, Dixon rushed into the end zone for the decisive score. The victory helped Florida stay one game ahead of Charleston for the final playoff spot in the American Conference Southern Division.

Dixon was the game MVP for his efforts in the victory. In addition to his game-winning touchdown, Dixon caught four passes for 79 yards and two scores and also recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD. Sutton led Florida receivers with nine receptions for 115 yards and two scores, also breaking up four passes and recording an assist. FRED HARLEY recorded two sacks, 3.5 tackles and a forced fumble for the Firecats.

James latched onto seven passes for 123 yards and a score to lead Pensacola. CHARLIE PETERSON completed 22-of-43 passes for 299 yards and four touchdowns.

Jacksonville Tomcats (6-8) 64, Mobile Wizards (0-14) 41

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville kept its playoff hopes alive with a 64-41 victory over the Mobile Wizards before 6,288 people at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum Saturday.

The two teams exchanged scores throughout the first half, with Jacksonville gaining a 35-27 halftime advantage on a CHRIS ANDERSON 38-yard touchdown reception as time expired.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Tomcats put the game out of reach in the final period of play scoring on three consecutive drives to open up a 51-35 lead with 10:13 to play. LAWRENCE PULLEN scored the first TD on a 39-yard pass from DAVID EDGERTON, DOMINIC ROSS added six more points with a 25-yard interception return and ROCCO FOGGIO concluded the stretch with a safety. KENDRICK LEE recovered a fumble for a touchdown in response for Mobile, but Jacksonville closed out the win with two unanswered scores.

Pullen returned a first-quarter kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown and amassed 89 yards on two kickoffs. Pullen also led Jacksonville receivers with six catches for 113 yards and two scores en route to being named game MVP. Lee led Mobile with a game-high eight receptions for 197 yards and four scores. Lee also added two fumble recoveries, including his fourth-quarter touchdown.

On defense, MARCELLE HOUGH picked off two passes and registered three tackles to be named ADT Defensive Player of the Game. ROBERT POLLARD also had two interceptions, recording a sack and rushing for five yards to be named Ironman of the game.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (6-9) 56, Mohegan Wolves (3-11) 39

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 56-39 victory over Northeast Division rival Mohegan in front of 5,701 fans at First Union Arena Saturday.

LANCE SMALL caught a 26-yard KEVIN CARTY touchdown pass midway through the second quarter to pull the Wolves to within 23-18, but the Pioneers scored twice within the final 34 seconds of the half to take a 33-18 lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton built on its momentum with KEVIN NAGLE and ELLY SALAMO runs, increasing its lead to 47-18 at the start of the fourth quarter. Mohegan opened the fourth strongly, with Carty rushing in from one yard out just 1:19 into the period. BRANDON BURNSIDE followed up that score with a 23-yard scoring reception before the Pioneers' AMAM ABYE ended the run with an 11-yard touchdown pass from BRYAN SNYDER. BRENT BURNSIDE pulled one more back for the Wolves, but JIMMIE KIBBLE sealed the win for the Pioneers with a 31-yard field goal with 56 seconds left in the game.

Salamo was the game MVP with 19 yards rushing, two touchdowns, a blocked kick and a sack. JOE KOWALSKI earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game recognition for the Pioneers with two tackles, a fumble recovery and a sack. For the Wolves, ANDY MACAIONE registered a tackle and an interception.

Abye was the Ironman of the Game, catching seven passes for 87 yards and two scores and rushing for a touchdown. Defensively, Abye had three tackles and a pass defended. Carty completed 13-of-20 passes for 162 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Wolves. Brent Burnside had a single rush for 42 yards and three receptions for 44 yards to pace Mohegan.

Quad City Steamwheelers (9-5) 69, Louisville Fire (2-12) 26

MOLINE, Ill. – MIKE CAWLEY threw for 274 yards and eight touchdowns to guide the Quad City Steamwheelers to a 69-26 victory over the Louisville Fire before 6,179 fans Saturday.

ANTHONY PAYTON helped Louisville take an early 13-7 lead with two touchdown receptions, but Quad City responded quickly and reeled off four unanswered touchdowns on three Cawley scoring strikes and ERIC THIGPEN's 21-yard interception return to take a 34-13 advantage into halftime.

Louisville scored the lone touchdown of the third quarter on an ANTHONY SHELMAN run, but once again, the Steamwheelers offense exploded and despite being shutout in the third, rebounded to post a 35-point fourth quarter. IRA GOOCH and JEFF HEWITT each caught two touchdown passes, TIM McGILL recorded a safety and CHRIS ANTHONY returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown to conclude the scoring in the fourth.

Cawley earned game MVP honors for his eight-touchdown performance. BRENT BROWNER was ADT Defensive Player of the Game with seven tackles, three assists and five passes defended. The Steamwheelers' defense intercepted four passes on the night and returned two for touchdowns.

JOSH FOURDYCE picked up Ironman recognition after rushing for eight yards, catching a pass for a 17-yard touchdown and recording two tackles and a fumble recovery on defense. Payton finished with a game-high 172 yards receiving and 13 receptions for Louisville.

Tennessee Valley Vipers (12-2) 53, Birmingham Steeldogs (9-5) 44

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee Valley outscored Birmingham 30-10 in the second and third quarters en route to earning state bragging rights and the National Conference Southern Division championship with a 53-44 victory over Birmingham in front of 8,533 fans at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Saturday.

In the second quarter, the Vipers defense limited the Steeldogs to just three points on a MICHAEL VAUGHN 41-yard field goal. In the meantime, Tennessee Valley's offense scored 13 points on REGGIE WORTHY and JERMAINE ALFRED touchdown runs.

ANTONIO SPEED added to the Vipers lead with an eight-yard TD run early in the third quarter before JOHNNY ANDERSON caught a 10-yard MONTRESSA KIRBY strike to end the Steeldogs' drought. TODD LATOURETTE and KENNY BAILEY added 10 more points to give Tennessee Valley a 43-23 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Birmingham tried to rally with 21 fourth-quarter points, but the Vipers managed to tally 10 of their own, including a 55-yard field goal by Latourette, to secure the win.

Alfred was the game MVP with 172 yards passing and three touchdowns against no interceptions. Alfred also had a rushing score. KELLY SNELL picked up ADT Defensive Player of the Game accolades with five tackles and a 25-yard interception return. Birmingham's HERMAN BELL returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and amassed 186 yards on 10 runbacks. Anderson caught four passes for 14 yards and two touchdowns and had two assists to earn Ironman honors.

Tulsa Talons (12-2) 69, Fresno Frenzy (4-10) 44

TULSA, Okla. – ANTHONY BUICH completed 22-of-37 passes for 242 yards and eight touchdowns as he led the Tulsa Talons to a 69-44 victory over Fresno at the Tulsa Convention Center with 6,152 fans in attendance.

Tulsa's offense and defense harassed the Frenzy in the second quarter, scoring 43 points. KEONTA GOLSON and SHAN JORDAN each had two touchdowns, with one of Jordan's coming on a 20-yard fumble return. LARRY HOLLINQUEST capped off the high-scoring period with a 50-yard interception return for touchdown as time expired in the half.

Up against a 57-24 halftime deficit the Frenzy scored twice in the third period and held Tulsa scoreless, but Fresno was unable to reduce the gap any further in the fourth quarter.

Buich's effort garnered him game MVP honors, as the Talons swept the game awards. Golson's two receptions went for touchdowns and totaled 39 yards. On defense, Golson added 3.5 tackles to collect Ironman recognition. Hollinquest completed the hat trick with 7.5 tackles and his interception return TD to earn him the ADT Defensive Player of the Game award. MITCH ALLNER racked up 180 all-purpose yards, 110 of which came on 10 receptions.

Nine different receivers caught passes for the Frenzy, led by ERIC MAHANKE's five receptions for 66 yards, as KENNY ROSE completed 19-of-34 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns.

Bakersfield Blitz (8-6) 52, Wichita Stealth (6-9) 39

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – TEDDY WILSON singlehandedly broke a 39-39 tie in the final minute of play to earn the Bakersfield Blitz a 52-39 victory over Wichita with 5,963 people in attendance at Centennial Garden Saturday.

RON LOPEZ tossed a five-yard pass to COREY McCOY with 48 seconds left in the game and repeated the feat on a two-point conversion to knot the score at 39-39. However, Bakersfield marched 45 yards down the field in four plays to regain the lead when Wilson caught a 10-yard pass from CHAD ELLIOTT with 25 seconds left on the clock.

XAVIER PATTERSON returned the ensuing kickoff to the Wichita 14-yard line, putting the ball in Lopez's hands for a final shot at victory. But Lopez fumbled the snap and Wilson grabbed the loose ball in the end zone to seal the victory for the Blitz.

Lopez and McCoy hooked up 12 times for 133 yards and four touchdowns as the receiver earned MVP recognition. Lopez finished the game with 219 yards passing and five scores. Elliott completed 17-of-21 passes for 238 yards and five scores to lead the Blitz. RYAN SLOTH caught six passes for 117 yards and two scores to pace Blitz receivers. Sloth added three tackles on defense and was named Ironman of the game.

J'SHARLON JONES earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors for Bakersfield. Jones registered six tackles and an interception to help the Blitz to victory.
