Richmond Speed QB Bob Bees is the team’s franchise player in every conceivable way. All 34 wins in the Speed’s 3-year history have been directed by the California native and Rocky Mountain College graduate – an average of over 11 wins per season. Bees is the consummate professional, a true gladiator, having not missed a single start in his 46-game, 3-year af2 career.
In 2002, Bees took his passing skills to new heights – establishing career highs in completions (293), passing yards (3650), and pass rating (111.9). Guiding the Speed to an all-time franchise-best 7-game winning streak to start the season, Richmond’s all-time leading passer was the centerpiece of an offensive juggernaut. He landed Game MVP honors 3 times, including af2 Offensive Player of the Week distinction in a key Week 14 win at Albany. In that game, Bees accounted for 7 Speed touchdowns – 5 through the air, 2 on the ground. As the season progressed, Bees displayed increasingly more true grit by garnering Built Ford Tough honors 3 times over the second half of the schedule.
After leading Richmond to a 12-4 record and its second straight playoff berth, Bees place as a foundation block in team history is secure. His attitude, commitment, desire, and professional consistency have made him a rallying point for team success. His willingness to help promote the Speed in the community, through television and magazine appearances and interaction with fans, has been crucial in establishing and maintaining a loyal and aware fan base in Richmond. It is with tremendous pride that the Richmond Speed organization nominates QB Bob Bees for the 2002 af2 Built Ford Tough Man of the Year.
