Richmond Speed News Release

Richmond, VA- Richmond Speed OL/DL Russell Newman has signed a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles for the upcoming 2002 season. The 6-1, 288 pound Philadelphia native was a defensive tackle by trade at Temple University. He battled through injuries during his senior season of 2001, tallying 9 tackles for loss – including 2.5 sacks – as well as 10 quarterback hurries and 40 total tackles.

Newman was a late-season addition to the Speed roster, bolstering the offensive and defensive line for the playoffs. He registered 2 solo tackles and 2 assists in extensive action on defense in Richmond's 57-48 first round loss at Cape Fear.

In an interview with Phil Sheridan of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Newman states, "I'm ecstatic. I grew up wanting to play for the Eagles. This is my hometown team. I can't wait."

On the team bus back to Richmond from Fayetteville, North Carolina, following the Speed loss last Saturday night, Newman received the call he had been waiting for his entire career – his agent summoned him to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for a workout with the Eagles the following Monday.

The Eagles began looking for an additional defensive lineman after starter Hollis Thomas went down with a broken foot – an injury which will require surgery August 8, and will sideline him indefinitely. In order to clear the way for Newman's signing, Philadelphia released Marcus Roberson, a University of Washington rookie defensive tackle. Although a relative long shot to make the opening day roster, Newman will get his first chance to make a lasting impression in the Eagles' preseason opener Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers.
