Florida Tropics SC News Release
BALTIMORE, Maryland - The Florida Tropics streak of never losing a season-opening game is now at six straight, thanks in large part to forward Zach Reget.
The Major Arena Soccer League Rookie of the Year in 2018-19 netted three goals -- including an empty netter with just over 10 seconds to play to seal the win -- to lift Florida to a 6-4 road win over the Baltimore Blast. The Tropics are 6-0 in season openers since joining the league for the 2016-17 season.
Remarkably, it's only the second time in his career that he's recorded a hat trick. Twelve times he has scored two goals in a game.
It was the season opener for both Eastern Division teams, with Florida moving on to meet Utica City FC Sunday afternoon in Utica. The game will be broadcast live on the MASL's YouTube channel.
Florida never trailed -- Reget got his first of the game less than five minutes into the first quarter -- and built a 3-1 halftime lead on goals by Victor Parreiras and Drew Ruggles. Third quarter goals from Reget and Bruno Henrique raised the advantage to 5-2.
Baltimore crept to within one in the fourth, but Tropics netminder Hugo Silva was big in net, as Baltimore peppered the Florida goal with 40 shots. Silva was credited with 17 saves, and was named the game's third star.
Lucas Roque got a pair for the blast, with singletons from Tony Donatelli and Mex Ferdinand.
The Tropics will open their home season on Saturday, Dec. 18th against the Ontario Fury in a 5:05 p.m. kickoff at the RP Funding Center. Information on tickets, including the team's "Tropical Blitz" program that allows fans free general admission tickets after paying to park, can be found at www.fltropics.com.
