Youngstown Phantoms Sign Davis Codd to Tender

The Youngstown Phantoms have announced the official signing of 2003 born forward Davis Codd to a USHL tender for the 2019-20 season. Codd, a native of Brighton, MI, is Youngstown's first and only tender signing prior to the USHL Phase I Draft.

"I was humbled and really excited to receive Youngstown's tender offer and I am blessed to have had so many options. It was a very difficult decision because the USHL is such a great league with so many great organizations. It was a family decision but it came down to my comfort with Coach Patterson and his staff and their style of play. I was also impressed with the talent on the team and their locker room. They have great chemistry. They really care for each other. Mr. Koehler was also very informative and he made sure my parents and I were comfortable with the schools and my studies. And finally, we got to spend some time in the Youngstown community and we were impressed. I want to be a big contributor to another great season in Youngstown. The coaches and Mr. Koehler have a lot of confidence in me and I don't want to disappoint them and I will work hard and make my teammates and coaches better. I can't wait for training camp and look forward to putting on that Phantom's sweater. I love the game of hockey and everything about it. I love to play fast, I love the responsibility of being a two way player, and I really like my teammates to succeed," said the recently signed Codd.

Davis Codd is currently a high school sophomore and spent this season with one of the top U16 AAA teams in the country - the Detroit Little Caesars U16 club. Last season, Codd produced a 20 goals and 50 assists in 71 games. The club also won the Michigan U16 state title and advanced to the U16 AAA National Championships in Grand Rapids, MI this year where they advanced to the semi-finals. The five foot ten inch, 165 pound right-shot forward is currently uncommitted to an NCAA Division I school.

"We are very excited to add Davis to our team and talented group of forwards," said Head Coach Brad Patterson.

"Davis has the ability to beat his opponents in a multitude of ways and that excites me. He thinks the game at a very high level and has a skill set that makes his teammates better every time he touches the ice. To top it off, the young man has impeccable character and is and extremely driven individual. I am really looking forward to seeing him at the Covelli Centre and next season with our club."

"Our staff has watched Davis beginning last July at the Select 15 Festival and we've been watching and tracking him this season with his Little Caesars club," said Phantoms General Manager Jason Koehler.

"Davis has shown tremendous growth and improvement for us in our viewings and we see him developing into an elite scoring line forward for us once he transitions comfortably in our league. He was a key contributor to a top U16 team and winner and had an outstanding showing in March at the USA NTDP Camp which really wowed us and showed us where he fits with his peers. Once we had the chance to meet the player and family on a personal level - it was no question he'd be a perfect fit for what we want, need, and expect here in our program from our student athletes. Davis has a very bright future in the game and we're thrilled he chose to join our club. We had great success with another similar player in Ben Schoen this season from the Little Caesars program and we expect nothing but the same from Davis next year and in the near future."

With the signing of Codd, the Phantoms will be forfeiting their first round pick in the 2019 USHL Phase 1 Draft on Monday May 6th.

Codd is the ninth player to sign a USHL tender in Phantoms' team history. The first year tenders were available to USHL clubs to sign players - 2015 first round NHL draft pick forward Kyle Connor (1996 born and now with the NHL's Winnipeg Jets) became Youngstown's first tender back in 2012, along with forward JJ Piccinich (1996), who was also a fourth round NHL Draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2014. Youngstown tendered one player each back in 2014 and 2015 - defenseman Ty Farmer (1998) and forward Jacob Tortora (1999). The club signed two players in 2016, forwards Curtis Hall and Max Elllis (both 2000 borns). In 2017, the club signed current forward Trevor Kuntar (2001) who will be returning for the Phantoms for the 2019-2020 season before heading off to Harvard in 2020 and last season signed current forward Ben Schoen (2002) who had a great first season in the USHL with 28 points and is committed to Miami (OH).

United States Hockey League teams are allowed to tender up to two players that are eligible for Phase I of the upcoming USHL draft to their roster, prior to the draft. If a team decides to use one of their tenders on a player, that team forfeits one or both of their first two round draft selections.
