Young WFC2 Fall 3-1 to Swope Park Rangers in Rematch
May 5, 2017 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 News Release
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - Ben McKendry scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick but it was too little, too late for Whitecaps FC 2 as they fell 3-1 to Swope Park Rangers at Children's Mercy Victory Field on Friday evening.Nansel Selbol, Lebo Moloto, and Kharlton Belmar scored in the first half for Swope Park, who improve to 4W-2L-0D and remain undefeated at home. WFC2 fall to 2W-3L-2D with the loss in a rematch of last year's USL Cup Playoffs Western Conference Final.
WFC2 head coach Rich Fagan made two changes to last week's lineup against Sacramento Republic FC, reinserting McKendry and Thomas Sanner into the starting XI that included four teenage WFC Residency products.
However, it was the home side that would gain an early advantage. Kevin Oliveira capitalized on a turnover in midfield and slid a through ball to Selbol, who deked past WFC2 defenders to slot the opening goal into Spencer Richey's net and give Rangers the 1-0 lead.
Moloto would double the Swope Park lead in the 28th minute. After being denied by Richey just moments earlier, the South African midfielder would convert when he combined with Selbol and Colton Storm on the counterattack.
The offensive surge from Rangers continued. In the 38th minute, it was Belmar benefiting from another clinical passing display in the midfield, with Storm and Moloto playing the setup role, to give Swope Park the 3-0 advantage.
The 'Caps would get their chances to cut into the deficit as Sanner, Andy Thoma, and Terran Campbell pushed late in the first half, but Swope Park came up with the timely stop each time.
The visitors would settle in on defence in the second half and McKendry pulled one back late for Vancouver, converting on an 86th minute penalty kick. Substitute Gloire Amanda won the spot kick on an aerial collision with Rangers defender Amer Didic inside the box, but it would not be enough as Swope Park won, 3-1.
Whitecaps FC 2 continue their road trip with a visit to Tulsa Roughnecks FC at ONEOK Field on Thursday, May 11. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT.
The boys are back home for Mothers' Day when they host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at UBC Thunderbird Stadium on Sunday, May 14. Moms get in for free, with the purchase of one or more tickets for the rest of the family. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. PT. Click here to purchase tickets.
