Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

TAMPA, FL (June 4, 2014) - When the Stone Crabs look back on the first half of their season in a couple of weeks, this one may sting worse than any other. A 5-2 lead going into the eighth inning on a night when they played their most complete game in quite some time seemed like enough. But it wasn't. And the Yankees came back with two runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to pull off the 7-6 upset at George M. Steinbrenner Field in the first meeting of the year.

Leonel Santiago was the story despite being roughed up in the bottom of the first. A leadoff triple by Jake Cave and a one out walk to Greg Bird brought up Zach Wilson, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left to put the Yanks ahead 1-0. Danny Oh then guided a hard base hit down the left field line to make it 2-0, but Josh Sale's strong throw to second caught Oh for the final out of the inning.

One night after crushing his first home run at Charlotte Sports Park, Marty Gantt took one out the opposite way off Yankees starter Daniel Camarena to make it 2-1 in the second. That score held until the Stone Crabs fifth when Camarena walked Jonathan Quionez before Julian Ridings grounds rule double over the wall in right center put runners at second and third with nobody out. A wild pitch scored Quionez to tie the score, and Leonardo Reginatto's clutch two-out single brought in Ridings to give the Stone Crabs their first lead.

Santiago came through with undoubtedly his finest start this season and only allowed one single to Greg Bird from innings two through six. His offense added to the lead in that inning when singles by Maxx Tissenbaum, Gantt, and Quionez loaded the bases for Ridings. The second-year outfielder smacked a two run single, and the Stone Crabs moved ahead 5-2. Santiago's final inning came in the eighth when he struck out Claudio Custodio and Cave, and Jared Sandberg would go to Jose Molina for the final four outs and the save.

An infield single by Cito Culver and a double by Bird placed runners at second and third for Wilson, and his two-run single cut the `Crabs lead to 5-4. Reginatto added another two-out RBI single in the ninth off flamethrower Nick Rumbelow, adding a run to make it 6-4 for the Yanks and their final three outs. The tying runs immediately reached after Jose Toussen's leadoff single and a walk to Trent Garrison. Rather than lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance the tying runs into scoring position, Al Pedrique had his eight and nine hitters swing away against Molina, who struck out Cody Grice and Custodio. The lefthander then worked ahead of Cave 1-2, but his RBI single scored Toussen to make it 6-5. Molina's final opportunity to end it went sailing away on Culver's game-winning two run double to the left field wall, and the Yankees celebrated together behind the mound with an unlikely 7-6 victory.

NOTES: Santiago's 7.2 IP was the longest start for the Stone Crabs this season, while his six strikeouts set a personal highhe only allowed three baserunners after the first inning, and none advanced past firstMolina (3-3) has one save in five opportunitiesthe Stone Crabs have now lost three games when leading 5-2 at the start of the eighth inning (May 7 & 25 in Bradenton)Coyle, Reginatto, Gantt, Quionez, and Ridings each finished with two hits and accounted for 10 of the 11 the Stone Crabs totaled.

The Stone Crabs will look to get back in the series on Thursday night at 7:00 PM when Blake Snell (0-1, 4.50 ERA) makes his second start against the Yankees Miguel Sulbaran (0-1, 5.02 ERA).
