Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - Pawtucket overpowered Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and starting pitcher Vidal Nuno (LP, 0-1) with a seven run, seven hit second inning as the Red Sox ended the Yankees season on Saturday night with a 7-1 win taking the best of five opening round playoff series three games to one.
Nuno, who began the season at Single-A Tampa in the Yankees minor league system was making his Triple-A and SWB debut after getting called up for the playoffs from Double -A Trenton. The first inning for the left hander yielded just one Paw Sox base runner, a two out walk to J.C. Linares, Nuno got out of the inning on a pop foul with no damage done.
The second inning would be the undoing of Nuno and ultimately the Yankees as Pawtucket sent 10 men to the plate in a seven run, seven hit inning as the Red Sox knocked out the starter after just 1.2 innings. The inning opened with three straight hits loading the bases before Nuno got Jason Repko to pop out to shortstop for the first out. Jon Hee got Pawtucket on the board with an RBI single to right scoring Andy LaRoche for a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Hazelbaker made it 2-0 with an RBI single to right field scoring Bryce Brentz. Tony Thomas narrowly beat out a potential inning ending double play with a run scoring fielder's choice to run the score to 3-0. Linares made it 4-0 with an RBI single scoring Hee. The final blow of the inning and the night for Nuno was a three run homer to left by Danny Valencia to push the lead to 7-0.
Paw Sox starter Nelson Figueroa (WP, 1-0), who began the season with the Yankees before being released and signing with Pawtucket was impressive early retiring the first 10 Yankee hitters of the game before allowing a one out homer in the fourth inning to Corban Joseph to deep right center field. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre could get no closer as Figueroa would only allow three more base runners the rest of the way: a two out walk in the fifth to Austin Romine, an error in the sixth allowing Kevin Russo to first and a single to left in the eighth by Ramiro Pena. Figueroa allowed just two hits, one run with one walk and eight strikeouts.
The Red Sox await the winner of the Charlotte vs. Indianapolis series and will open the Governor's Cup Final at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Tuesday night.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's remarkable 2012 season comes to a close with a regular season record of 84-60 and a fifth International League North Division title in six seasons with Dave Miley as the manager.
