Youth vs. experience in Milwaukee
Milwaukee Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer played in the first indoor soccer game in the U.S. 30 years ago, as a member of the Cincinnati Kids. Tozer has won more than 600 games, four league championships and seven "Coach of the Year" awards. His coaching counterpart in the inaugural XSL match on Saturday is the Detroit Ignition's Matt Johnson, who is coaching his first match.
Ethan Zohn and Neto in New Jersey
Fresh off a 550-mile soccer dribble from Foxboro to Washington D.C. to raise awareness for AIDS in Africa, philanthropist Ethan Zohn will be coming back through Newark on Sunday to serve as honorary captain of the New Jersey Ironmen for their 2008-09 season opener.
On the field, the Ironmen fans will get their first look at Neto on the home side of the field. The former MISL MVP came over from Baltimore in the offseason and heads a veteran group for Head Coach Omid Namazi. Chicago is the opponent.
Switching sides
Chicago's visit to New Jersey sees two important players in the opposite jerseys from last year. Lazo Alavanja was one of the Ironmen's top scorers, but signed with Chicago in the off-season. The well-traveled Chile Farias is now in New Jersey after a season spent with Chicago and Orlando, then a summer with the U.S. futsal team.
Brine provides official XSL ball
The XSL Match Ball is Brine's Triumph X 600, featuring the league logo, green-and-white color scheme and signature of Commissioner Brian Loftin. It is the result of a multi-year partnership that makes Brine the Official Match Ball Provider of the XSL.
