March 5, 2009 - Xtreme Soccer League (XSL) News Release
A tough loss for the Storm
Jeff Richey had put together a solid year in goal for the Chicago Storm, following a summer with the U.S. national futsal team. But at the tail end of a superb game Sunday against Detroit, Richey pulled a calf muscle to go with a knee ligament sprain, and his return this season is unclear.
He certainly will be out this Sunday when the Storm (6-9) host the first-place Milwaukee Wave (8-5). Bayard Elfvin, who has played in both California and New Jersey, has been training with the Storm and was signed this week to fill in.
February Players of the Month
He was signed in the fall with much hoopla, a former league MVP jumping to the New Jersey Ironmen. Adauto Neto truly made that impact felt in February, winning XSL Offensive Player of the Month honors with 18 points. The Ironmen were 3-2 and crept to within 2 games of the league lead.
Chicago's Fabinho was the Defensive Player of the Month and Milwaukee's Nick Vorberg was Goalkeeper of the Month.
Stat of the week
Every XSL team has suffered key injuries, starting with Marcio Leite of Milwaukee on the first day of practice. But few have had the statistical impact of Worteh Sampson's ailments. He missed games early with a leg injury, then saw his year ended with an Achilles' tendon injury. Detroit was 5-0 with the big target forward in the lineup, but is 2-6 without him.
Delevski in the fold
A two-time MISL MVP with one of the most potent left-foot shots in the game, Dino Delevski signed last week with the XSL and was assigned to Milwaukee. Delevski scored 210 points in 2001-02 with the Kansas City Comets.
