XSL weekly update
February 11, 2009 - Xtreme Soccer League (XSL) News Release
Sampson Shows his Strength
The indescribable bicycle kick goal he dropped on Milwaukee last Sunday will become an Internet favorite, but Worteh Sampson has meant a lot more than highlights for Detroit since his return from a preseason injury that kept him out of the lineup until Jan. 10. Sampson has five goals and an assist for 11 points and the Ignition are 5-0 with the big Liberian in the lineup. His size provides a tremendous presence at the target position and he is one big reason the Ignition are on top of the XSL standings.
More than just league play
The XSL's community focus is an integral part of its mission, and central to that are the educational outreach programs at every location. Chicago hosted its Storming Schools exhibition game on Tuesday for nearly 3,000 area students, all of whom had been treated to a school assembly conducted by Storm players at one time or another. The Milwaukee Wave play their second of three such games this year on Feb. 17, and on March 17 a full house of 9,400 is on tap. The Making Waves program is in its fourth year and will be in almost 80 schools. Detroit and New Jersey are building similar outreach programs.
Another big XSL weekend
By winning their 15th consecutive home game, the Ignition took a one-game lead in the standings over Milwaukee. The two teams have a rematch this Sunday, and if Detroit - which has lost 2 of the 3 games it's played on the road this year - can steal one, it is in fantastic position for the second half of the season. Chicago snapped a five-game skid last week against New Jersey, and hosts the Ironmen Sunday in its first home game in six weeks.
