SACRAMENTO CAPITALS EARN âBEST LOCAL CHAMPS'
Each year, Sacramento magazines' subscribers vote for Sacramento's finest. For 2003 the Sacramento Capitals took home the award for âBest Local Champs'.
This year the Sacramento Capitals also have the distinction of holding the most league championships in WTT history with their record of five championship seasons. Perhaps more impressive though, is the fact that during the 2003 season, the team set an attendance record for WTT while playing in a parking lot at Sunrise Mall.
Q & A - MARIA SHARAPOVA
Maria Sharapova, a native of Russia played for the Newport Beach Breakers in the 2003 season.
Tell us how you felt after your first WTA win at the AIG Japan Open.
"I was extremely happy with my win in Tokyo! It was so exciting for me knowing that my hard work throughout the year had paid off. The beginning of the year was very difficult for me, but I had many goals I wanted to achieve, and the only way to achieve them was to believe in myself, and that's exactly what I did. When I held up that heavy trophy I thought to myself, âI did it! I really did!' This is the one title that I will never forget!"
Where has the tour taken you since Japan and what are your future plans?
"Tokyo has given me a tremendous amount of confidence. It has given me more experience, which will be a great help for my future. In the upcoming year I want to gain more physical and mental strength on tour."
What do you like best about playing World TeamTennis?
"The best thing about playing World TeamTennis is being in a team environment. Knowing that you have a bench full of teammates supporting you is a big plus. I also enjoyed the great atmosphere created by the crowds, as well as the many children that attended the matches. I really liked that our team was based in the most gorgeous place, Newport Beach!"
What's your favorite food?
"I actually like any kind of food, especially if it has some extra sugar in it! Just joking! On the road I have no choice but to eat at restaurants, however, when I'm home my mom always cooks Russian food because it is SO GOOD!"
What's your favorite TV show?
" I really don't watch too much television because I spend all of my spare time on my schoolwork. If I did watch a show, it would probably be a comedy, like Friends."
