WPS Teams Announce Opening Day Rosters

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 1, 2010) - The eight teams in Women's Professional Soccer announced their opening day rosters on Thursday, consisting of 18-player rosters and four optional developmental players. Each team is allowed to carry a maximum of five international players on their rosters. WPS Kick-Off Week 2010 begins April 10-11 with four WPS games on one weekend for the first time. The regular season will run through September 12, 2010 with the WPS Playoffs running September 19-26, culminating in the WPS Championship.

The international representation in the league has increased from 13 countries in 2009 to a total of 19 countries represented in Women's Professional Soccer, including - for the first time - players from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Spain.

Among colleges, traditional power North Carolina (17) had the most alumni making the 18-player rosters, while other college powers Notre Dame (6), Portland (6), Santa Clara (6) and Virginia all had the second-most players in WPS among the 18-player rosters. Within the U.S. states, California has the most representation, with 22 players listing their hometown as being in The Golden State.
