World-Champion Springfield Lasers 2020 Tennis Season Opens July 12
February 17, 2020 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Springfield Lasers News Release
Springfield, MO - The two-time world-champion Springfield Lasers Pro Tennis Team has released its 2020 season schedule, which includes a busy first week at home.
The defending champions of the World TeamTennis league begin the season in Springfield Sunday, July 12, at Cooper Tennis Complex, and go on to play a total of five home matches that week. Two more home matches follow the next weekend.
World TeamTennis released the league's complete schedule Feb. 10, as well as unveiled a new team, the Chicago Smash. Chicago has had two previous teams in the league: the Chicago Aces, which played in 1974 and 1982, and the Chicago Fyre, which played 1983-1986. Chicago is now the Lasers' closest rival and the only other team and the Midwest. A total of nine teams now play in the league.
"We look forward to defending our title in the 2020 season," said Paul Nahon, Springfield Lasers General Manager. "It's exciting that the league continues to grow, and it's great to see World TeamTennis returning to Chicago."
Nahon said he is in the process of recruiting the team roster, including some returning stars from 2019. New this year, World TeamTennis launched free agency player recruitment, giving teams more flexibility to sign players, instead of the one-day player draft used in previous years. Recruiting is also challenging for all teams, due to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games overlapping the World TeamTennis season.
The three-week World TeamTennis season includes seven home and seven away matches for the Lasers, including (home matches in bold):

Springfield won its first King Trophy in 2018, after 23 years in the league and four previous trips to the championship final.
The Lasers won their second World TeamTennis Championship Aug. 3, 2019, seven weeks after the St. Louis Blues won the Stanley Cup, and six months before the Kansas City Chiefs won the Superbowl, bringing three professional sports championship trophies home to Missouri within a single year.
