Women's Football Kicks Off

March 15, 2004 - National Women's Football Association (NWFA) News Release


Nashville, TN - The National Women's Football Association, the largest full contact football league in the world, will be kicking off it's 4th full season on Saturday, April 3rd.

The NWFA has experienced explosive growth over the past four years and will have 37 teams in 23 states competing is the 2004 season. There are seven divisions stretching from Maine to Texas. "Each year we bring in a few highly selected teams into our league and this year, we've added these teams: The Shoals Smashers (AL), The Austin Outlaws (TX), The Dallas Dragons (TX), The Denton Stampede (TX), The Evansville Express (IN), The Roanoke Revenge (VA), and The Wisconsin Riveters. The Austin Outlaws and the Wisconsin Riveters teams joined the NWFA from smaller leagues. They like our structure and track record and value the fact that we have a full time staff working for our teams twenty-four seven," states league VP, Debby Lening.

"We're really excited about our upcoming season and know that our fans around the country will get to see some really great football games. Some of this year's expansion teams have had almost a year to get ready to play so we are looking for some new challengers," states league CEO, Catherine Masters.

The NWFA will host the 4th World Championship of Women's Football on Saturday, July 31st at the 68 million dollar Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. "Never before in the history of our sport have the top two teams had the opportunity to play in such a state of the art stadium. We are very proud of our progress and look forward to packing the stands for the event."

The NWFA has a five year TV deal with the Football Network and once the network is up and running, the league will showcase its games to more than 40 million homes.

The NWFA has been featured in more than 250 major publications and TV networks including the CBS Evening News, The NBC Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The NBC Today Show, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, The New York Times, Nickelodeon, the Boston Globe, The Washington Post and many, many local and regional networks and publications.
