Women's Football In Ohio

Published on August 26, 2003 under National Women's Football Association (NWFA) News Release

The National Women's Football Association has announced the information of the Columbus Comets which will replace the Columbus Flames. The Flames license was pulled from its owner due to unpaid financial obligations said league CEO, Catherine Masters.

The license to operate a team in Columbus has been granted to the Columbus Comets, LLC which is owned by Shirley Miller and Lori Davis. Miller is the Branch Manager of the St. James Mortgage Company and has been a fan of the Columbus team since its inception. "This is a great opportunity for us to really get this team on solid ground and to use our many contacts to make sure it's a big part of our community," states Miller. Tryouts for the Columbus Comets will be announced in September.

Lori Davis, a life long resident of Columbus Ohio, has been a Pipe fitter with local #189 since 1984. She retired from the 2003 Columbus Flames due to back injury before their first game. "That really killed me, I was finally getting to fulfill my dream, but now I feel like I've been given a second chance." Lori will manage the team full time from an office in Pickerington and says that she and her partners are the perfect combination to move the Comets to the top of the league.

Shirley Miller has owned and operated businesses in and around Columbus for all of her Professional Career. When she is not originating home loans at St. James Mortgage she likes to watch football and boxing. Her motto in the mortgage business is "What Ever It Takes" and that is her attitude for the Comets as well.

Jeff and Tammy Deirkshiede, also long time central Ohio residents and business owners, say they have been huge football fans forever and are truly excited about this new opportunity. They will help Miller and Davis operate the team.

"We had tremendous interest from the local business community when the team came up for sale and selecting the right owners was quite a challenge. We believe that Shirley and Lori have what it takes from a professional standpoint to really make this team a huge success. They know how to operate a successful business and have the contacts and the network to make the team highly visible and popular in the community. We're expecting great things from them," states Masters.
