Manchester Wolves News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. (May 4, 2005) â The arenafootball2 league office announced yesterday that Manchester Wolves wide receiver/linebacker J.J. McKelvey has been named the U.S. Army Ironman of the Week for Week 5 of the 2005 season.
McKelvey (6-4, 225, Clemson), playing in his second season, helped the Wolves dispose of the Macon Knights by scoring points on both sides of the ball in a 56-32 win Friday night. On offense McKelvey caught six passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side he made one solo tackle, recorded a sack and intercepted a pass for a 25-yard score. His big plays turned a close game into a runaway. With Manchester ahead 26-10 at the half, McKelvey came out in the second half and scored the next three touchdowns for the Wolves to make the score 46-16. McKelvey's efforts helped the Wolves to their third straight win.
"I'm surprised but very grateful for the honor," McKelvey said. "I'm not out there alone though. We're all playing our part as a team and that's what has made us successful so far."
This is the first-ever weekly award for McKelvey and the second for a Wolves player this season. QB Jake Eaton won Offensive Player of the Week in Week 3.
"J.J. played a great game in the win (against Macon) and he deserves the award," Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett said. "And as good as he is now, he's only going to get better."
Through the first four games this season, McKelvey has been the Wolves most consistent threat among the team's talented group of receivers, ranking among the league leaders in receptions (T-2nd â 37) and touchdown receptions (T-7th â 9). On defense, the ever-improving former Clemson product is tied for sixth on the squad in tackles with 8.0 and now has one interception and one sack to his credit.
This Friday night the Wolves (3-1) play host to the Louisville Fire (4-0) in a critical early season East Division showdown at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Fire have a well-balanced, high-scoring offensive attack led by veteran QB Matt Sauk. Sauk led the af2 in passing yards and total offense in 2004 and has gotten off to a solid start in 2005. He currently ranks among the league's best in passer rating ( 122.9), passing yards (959) and passing touchdowns (19). Leading Louisville's receiving corps is OS James Scott. Scott has 27 catches for 291 on the season and five touchdowns. Other talents on offense for the Fire include WR/DBs Cesare Manning and Tony Stallings, who each have six touchdowns. On defense, DS Rob Green leads the team with 23.0 total tackles and seven pass breakups.
