Manchester Wolves News Release

The Manchester Wolves defense needed to come up big and did just that with a record-setting effort as they limited the East Division co-leaders Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers to just 14 points in their 45-14 win in front of 6,031 fans on Brady Sullivan Field at Verizon Wireless Arena Friday night.

The Wolves (7-7) set a franchise record for least points allowed in a game, breaking the previous record of 20, set on April 5, 2003, against the now defunct Rochester Brigade. Manchester shut out the Pioneers in the first half en route to a 24-0 halftime advantage. The defense stopped the Pioneers (8-6) on all six possessions, forcing a pair of fumbles while sacking Pioneers QB Mike Granieri on three occasions. For the game, the Wolves defense stopped Wilkes/Barre Scranton on nine of their 11 total possessions along with holding star Pioneers WR Leroy McFadden to only four catches for 50 yards and the two Pioneer touchdowns.

Schutt Offensive Player of the Game QB Steve Bellisari was efficient in leading the Wolves offense, completing 18 of 27 passes for 167 yards and five touchdowns. WR/LB Wendell Williams was his favorite target, catching nine passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Williams also had the Cutters Catch of the Game, leaping high in the second quarter to pull in a touchdown reception. U.S. Army Ironman of the Game FB/LB Mark Kimener completed the sweep as he added 17 yards on seven carries on offense and collected two tackles, a forced fumble and a sack on the defensive side of the ball. His 17 yards tied the franchise record of 242 rushing yards in a season, set in by LaJhon Jones.

The Wolves spoiled the return to New Hampshire of former UNH Wildcat QB Granieri, who only completed 13-of-35 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown.
