Portland Forest Dragons News Release

DURHAM, N.C. - Northern League founder Miles Wolff announced today his resignation as commissioner of the Northern League Central Division.

Wolff founded the Northern League in 1993 as the first of the independent professional leagues.

"I am very proud of what we have accomplished with the Northern League Central," Wolff said. "Many people predicted that baseball without major league affiliations would not be successful, but we have proven that baseball when it is played for the fans can be tremendously attractive. We have eight new ballparks in the division and many strong franchises. It is a good time for me to work on other baseball projects. I thank those cities and fans that had confidence in the league and wish them all a great future in baseball."

The Central Division has 10 teams for 2002 in Gary, Ind., Joliet and Schaumburg, Ill., Fargo, N.D., Sioux Falls, S.D., Lincoln, Neb., Duluth and St. Paul, Minn., Sioux City, Iowa, and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Wolff will remain commissioner of the eight-team Northern League East Division that has franchises in Pittsfield and Brockton, Mass., Little Falls, N.J., Elmira, Albany and Glens Falls, N.Y., Allentown, Pa. and Québec City, Québec.

Wolff is also commissioner of the eight-team Central League (formerly the Texas-Louisiana League) with franchises in Alexandria, La., Ozark, Mo., Jackson, Miss., and Amarillo, Edinburg, Harlingen, San Angelo and Fort Worth, Texas.

The Northern League Central Division is expected to name a replacement commissioner soon.
