Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release

BOARDMAN, Ohio (Friday, March 28, 2008) - Using two goals from Miles Winter and two helpers from Chad Boeckman, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms came back to win a 3-2 decision over the U.S. National Team in front of nearly 1000 fans on Friday night at the Ice Zone.

A.J. Treais catapulted the U.S. out to a 1-0 lead 13:21 into the first period. Leading a 2-on-1 break and with his passing lane cut off, Treais fired a shot over the glove of Phantoms goaltender Jordan Tibbett for his eighth marker of the season.

Winter tied things up 5:46 into the middle frame. Trent Bonnett's shot from the point deflected right onto Winter's tape - standing all alone in the high slot. Winter's first tally of the night was also Boeckman's first helper of the night - his sixth straight game with an assist.

Grant Scott's powerplay tip-in of Cam Fowler's 55-footer with just four minutes left in the second period gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead after the 40-minute mark.

The third period, however, belonged to Mahoning Valley. Johnny Meo tied things up at 2-2 when he out-waited Maricic and popped a backhand over the sprawling goaltender at 7:30 of the final frame.

Winter's second of the night, on the powerplay, with just 7:10 left in regulation proved to be the game winner. His laser from the left circle again beat Maricic high to the glove side for his 25th goal of the season. Winter is currently on a seven game point scoring streak.

Jordan Tibbett limited the U.S. to just one power play goal on six attempts, stopping 31 of 33 shots for his 11th win of the season. The Phantoms went 1 for 4 with the man-advantage.

Despite 34 saves, Maricic dropped just his second decision all year.

The Phantoms (35-18-4, 74 points) and Team USA (28-25-4, 60 points) will each play their 58th and final regular season game of the year on Saturday night at the Ice Zone in Boardman. Game time is slated for 7:15 p.m.
