Winston-Salem Storm News Release

Winston-Salem, NC. The ABA announced recently that it had added Winston-Salem, NC to its roster of expansion teams for the 2008 season.

The Triad ABA will have a "Last Chance Rush" voting and sign-up post for the Travel Team Tryouts at Hanes Mall on Thursday, September 6, 2007 in front of Belk's. The event will last all day from 10am until 9pm. There will be "hooping for shirts" contests and random raffles conducted throughout the day. The public will also get a last chance to vote for their favorite team name. There will also be a radio personality from Majic 94.1FM to emcee the event. The Sports Management Club will be on hand to help with community votes and the ScottCares Foundation will be there also. "We are just trying to make our presence known," said Kim Venable. "The Triad and surrounding areas will be a part of many events that will be evolving this year. This is the Triad's team and we want to make sure that the Triad can participate in every event that is presented to the community."

The Triad Community will be given the opportunity to name their team. "This is the community's team" stated Wes Mason. The community will be able to vote at 12 local businesses that have already pledged support of the team or vote online at www.triadaba.com. Locations include Tee Time Sports & Spirits, Hooters (Hanes Mall), Fox and Hound Pub & Grille (Lower Mall), Sports Zone Pub and Grille, My Cousin Vinny's, Wings to Go, Cahill & Swain Incorporated, Ham's Restaurant (Stratford Road), Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar (Hanes Mall Blvd), Cuttin Hair Barber Shop, Mountain Fried Chicken and Nitty Gritty Soul Cafe. Voting will last for 30 days from August 6th-September 6th. There have been over 1500 votes cast so far between online voting and host sponsored voting sites. We are looking to get at least 500 more votes before September 6th.

Triad ABA is inviting everyone to come out Friday, September 7th starting at 6pm until 10pm and Saturday, September 8th beginning at 8am until 2pm to look at the local talent that will grace the new Winston-Salem Travel Team for 2007-2008. The tryouts will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road in Winston-Salem, NC. Admission to view the tryouts can be two can goods and all proceeds will be donated to the Crisis Control Ministries of Winston-Salem. Come and see your hometown favorites as they show off their skills on the basketball court. "Because this is the community's team, having local talent on our team is the best way to get North Carolina's awesome athletes recognized," added Mason. "North Carolina harbors some of the best talent around and now our hometown stars can really shine."

The tryouts are being sponsored by Calvary Baptist Church, Mountain Fried Chicken, Sports Zone Pub and Grill, Coca Cola, Viewfinders Media, ScottCares Foundation, Next Level Accessories and Old Vineyard Behavioral Health Services.

The Triad ABA will have a travel team this year to play against colleges and other ABA teams for exhibition and charity. "We are looking for a roster of 12 men that are willing to play in an exciting environment and be willing to give back to the community," said GM Lou Vincent. "We are currently in the process of scheduling games in Delaware and Orlando with ABA team. We have also scheduled a charity game to be held in Yanceyville in late September. More details will follow.

Triad ABA has partnered with Winston-Salem State University's Sport Management Majors Club. There are thirty-three (33) students that have volunteered to help make this basketball team a fixture in the community. Triad ABA has also made close ties with the ScottCares Foundation and Next Level Accessories.

Community support is instrumental for the basketball team to be successful for year to come. Currently there are negotiations with the Joel Coliseum to play at the Annex. "Winston-Salem is already in the running for the 2009 ABA All-Star Game," added Wes Mason. "I have discussed this with the CEO of the ABA. This is basketball country and there isn't a better choice than Winston-Salem, NC to hold such an event."

Kimberly Venable has been appointed team Director of Marketing. A Winston-Salem native and Winston-Salem State University graduate of Sport Management with a concentration in Marketing and Promotions, Kimberly brings a wealth of experience and energy to the organization.
